Atletico Madrid have had a relatively easy campaign in the Champions League this season. They topped Group C including the likes of Benfica, Galatasaray and Astana and were drawn Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven in the first round of the knock out stage of the competition.

The Spanish side were widely tipped off to get to the next round without much of a fuzz but the two legs have been anything but normal.

PSV did extremely well to hold on to a 0-0 draw at home and will have been happy going to the Vicente Calderon for the second leg knowing that if they score once, their opponents will have to score twice to stay in the tie.

However, neither team could break the dead lock over the span of two hours on the night and the tie had to be decided by a penalty shootout, a grim way of dumping a team out.

Zoet, the goal keeper for the Dutch side was impressive in the first leg in Netherlands and he once again kept his team in the game till the final whistle with a number of astonishing saves on the night.

Locadia and Torres both hit the woodwork in normal time but it was Zoet who put in a man of the match performance and denied Griezmann from point blank range early in the game.

Filipe Luis, Guardado, De Jong and Locadio all came close in normal time but the goal keepers at both ends were determined not to let one go in and helped keep the score at 0-0 over the course of the two legs.

Antonio Griezmann and Lucas Hernandez both missed good opportunities in the extra time but neither of them could find the back of the net sending the game into overtime and penalties.

The Spanish side will not have been happy as they were slightly the better the side over the two legs but had to keep their nerve in the shoot-out to come out of this game victorious.

PSV on the other end did extremely well to stay in the game right till the end and were hoping to get through to the next round and dumping the home side.

Van Ginkel, Griezmann, Guardado, Gabi, Davy Propper, Koke, Jeffrey Bruma, Saul, Hector Moreno, Torres, Maxime Lestienne, Jimenez, Santiago Arias and Filipe Luis all converted their spot kicks making the game even more interesting.

The shoot-out was tied at 7 each before PSV player Narsingh could only hit the cross bar from his spot kick. This left Juanfran with a chance to seal the victory.

And the defender had no problem what so ever and coolly slotted home to set off a loud cheer at the Calderon.

Atleti are through to the next round but in dramatic fashion. They will have hoped to finish the work earlier than a shoot-out but will be happy to go through to the next round.

PSV will be devastated as their hard work for over 3 and a half hours over the two ties was undone by a single spot kick that sent them crashing out of the cup.
