AUS vs SA 2016: WACA Curator Confident Of Producing Bowler-Friendly Pitch
Over the years, Australian pitches have reminded us of how fiery bowler-friendly tracks can be for batsmen to face. But last year, W.A.C.A curator Matt Page was criticised heavily for producing a flat wicket for the Australia-New Zealand Test. However, the W.A.C.A curator is confident of producing a pitch that will favour the bowlers in the first Test between AUstralia-South Africa, that gets underway from November 3.
An year ago, the flat pitch of Perth, where both Australia and New Zealand managed to score lot of runs, was criticised by Australian skipper Steve Smith and former Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson, who retired after that Test. The pitch had no resemblance to what a typical Australian pitch looks like.
Australia go into the first test against South Africa with three pacers hoping the pitch would be a bowler-friendly one. Thus, W.A.C.A curator Matt Page is under immense pressure to produce a wicket that helps the bowlers.
“Hopefully, it’ll be something very similar to the last (Sheffield) Shield game we had,” he said. “There was a bit of bounce there, there was a bit of seam, something there for the bowlers, something there for the batters, there were three hundreds. That’s sort of what we’re looking for this time of year, being November” said Matt Page.
Ahead of the first test against the Proteas, Page hopes the pitch would have something for both the batters and bowlers. In an effort to produce a pitch like what it was in the 70’s, Page said they have left a bit of grass on the wicket and adjusted the amount of water used.
“Being the W.A.C.A, everything we try to produce has that pace and bounce, everyone wants to come here or turn on the TV and see that ball flying through to the wicketkeeper,” he said. “That’s what we try and prepare – if they came to me and asked for a spinner’s wicket, I’d be quite concerned,” he concluded.
