Riding on AB de Villiers’ 104-ball, 176 runs knock, South Africa thrashed Bangladesh by 104 runs in Paarl to win the second ODI and clinch the three-match series. The 33-year old hit 15 fours and seven sixes during his knock as the Proteas posted a mammoth 353 for 6 in the allotted 50 overs.

In reply, Bangladesh started the chase on a good note with half-centuries from Imrul Kayes (68) and Mushfiqur Rahim (60) leading the charge, but they were eventually bowled out for  249 in the 48th over.

Debutant Imam-ul-Haq’s century guides Pakistan to series win:

Imam-ul-Haq, the nephew of Pakistan legend Inzamam-ul-Haq, scored a magnificent century on his international debut as the reigning Champions Trophy holders drubbed Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the third ODI on Wednesday (October 18) to clinch the five-match series.

Batting first, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 208 with ten balls to spare in their innings. Hasan Ali was the destructor-in-chief, taking 5 for 34 as he became the quickest Pakistan bowler to reach 50 one-day international wickets, surpassing bowling legend Waqar Younis.

Meanwhile, in reply, Pakistan, led by Imam’s century, chased down the total inside 43 overs to take a 3-0 lead.

Ish Sodhi replaces injured Todd Astle for the India ODIs:

In-form leg-spinner Todd Astle has been ruled out of the upcoming One-Day International series against India after suffering a groin injury during the first warm-up game against Board President’s XI on Tuesday (October 17). Fellow leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, who was named in the T20 squad, has been drafted in the ODI squad.

Astle was in fine form in the recently-concluded One-Day series between India A and New Zealand A, taking six wickets at an impressive average of 27.83. The performance saw him getting selected in the ODI series ahead of Ish Sodhi.

Gurjant’s late strike helps India secure 1-1 draw against South Korea

High-flying India’s winning run in the Asia Cup came to an end on Wednesday (October 18) as they eked out a 1-1 draw against Korea in their first Super 4 stage match of the 10th men’s Asia Cup. Striker Gurjant Singh scored a dramatic last-minute equaliser after Lee Jungjun gave Korea the lead in the 41st minute.

Brazil thrashed Honduras 3-0 in the last-16 stage at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium on Wednesday to set up a mouthwatering clash against Germany in the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Wednesday saw European heavyweights like Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich registering comfortable wins to consolidate their position in their respective groups. Barcelona thrashed Olympiakos 3-1 while Juventus remained hot on their heels in Group D with a narrow 2-1 win over Sporting Lisbon.

Bayern Munich thumped Celtic 3-0 while Paris Saint Germain maintained their 100 per cent record in Group B with a resounding 4-0 victory at Anderlecht. Manchester United also consolidated their position at the top of Group A with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Benfica.

Atletico Madrid, however, are in danger of bowing out from the group stage after a dull 0-0 draw at 10-man Qarabag left them with only two points from their first three fixtures. Chelsea and Roma, on the other hand, played out an entertaining 3-3 draw at the Stamford Bridge.

FC Basel also enhanced their chances of making it to the next round with a 2-0 win over CSKA Moscow.

Denmark Open: Saina Nehwal, K Srikanth advance to second round, PV Sindhu bows out:

India had a mixed day at Denmark Open on Wednesday as Saina Nehwal knocked out Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain but PV Sindhu crashed out of the tournament after suffering a straight-game loss against China’s Chen Yufei in the opening round.

Saina defeated two-time World champion Marin 22-20 21-18 while Sindhu went down fighting 17-21 21-23 against World No. 10.

In the men’s section, Kidambi Srikanth and H S Prannoy advanced to the next stage with wins over Subhankar Dey and Denmark’s Emil Holst 21-18 21-19 respectively while B Sai Praneeth bowed out after losing 10-21 15-21 to Hans- Kristian Solberg Vittinghus.

Among other Indians in the fray, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy suffered twin defeats in mixed and men’s doubles competition. In the mixed doubles, Satwiksairaj and his partner Ashwini Ponnappa lost 19-21 17-21 to Niclas Nohr and Sara Thygesen while in men’s doubles, he and Chirag Shetty, failed to beat Chung Eui Seok and Kim Dukyoung.

Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy also crashed out of the competition with a 13-21 18-21 loss to Denmark’s Mads Conrad- Petersen and Mads Pieler Kolding. In women’s doubles, Ashwini and Sikki lost 21-15 18-21 21-23 to Chow Mei Kuan and Lee Meng Yean. Another mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy also went home after losing 17-21 15-21 to Sam Magee and Chloe Magee.
