The whole of India might have been engulfed in sorrow and disappointment after Team India’s heartbreaking loss at the hands of bitter rivals Pakistan in the final of ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday (2017) but there was one region in this cricket-crazy nation which celebrated Pakistan’s win in a manner that will even make the Pakistanis doubt their loyalty to the Men in Green.
No prizes for guessing that we are talking about Kashmir. The state, which has been a major area of a tussle between the two neighbours since independence, celebrated Pakistan’s win to the fullest. And the newspaper headlines of Kashmir made it quite clear that the people of the valley were supporting the Men in Green instead of the Men in Blue.
Pakistan won their first Champions Trophy title by thrashing India by a whopping margin of 180 runs, sending the majority of the people in Kashmir in a celebratory mode. To give you an idea of things that happened in the state following Pakistan’s historic triumph, we put together a gallery of some front pages dedicated to Kashmiris’ celebration.
“Kashmir erupts in joy,” read the lead story in the Kashmir Reader.
“Pakistan’s thrilling win against India in the Champions Trophy final on Sunday saw celebrations erupt on streets. The joy began in the afternoon when India asked Pakistan to bat and the first boundary crossed the fence,” the daily reported.
“While Pakistan was still to crush the Indian team by 180 runs, mosques at many places hummed with pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans. The Pakistan anthem was played at many places as well. In downtown Srinagar, youth fired crackers continuously. When Pakistan was close to defeating India, youth gathered at marketplaces across Kashmir blasting crackers one after the other, it further added.
Greater Kashmir also published the story in one of its front pages with the headline: “Champions Trophy: Kashmir erupts in joy as Pakistan beat India.”
Rising Kashmir also gave the story an opening page slot with the headline: “Crackers go off as Pak pulls off stunning win over India.”
The Kashmir Observer too covered Kashmir people’s celebration on its front page with the caption:“Oval Outcome: Valley Erupts in Celebration”
” A day after people observed a mourning strike against the deaths of militants and civilians by the security forces, Valley Sunday evening erupted into celebrations following the defeat of Indian cricket team at the hands of Pakistan at Oval, England,” reported Kashmir Observer.
“Firecrackers began exploding soon after India’s top order batsmen fell in quick succession in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy. The celebrations continued through the night across Kashmir, police sources from various district headquarters said,” the report further stated.
