Wolfsburg vs Gent: preview, predictions, expected line-ups and betting odds
Football’s elite tournament will once again be back this mid-week from top teams from Europe battling it out for the honors at the end of the season.
Wolfsburg hold the advantage after their narrow victory in the first leg when they take on Belgian side Gent in the second leg of their Champions League knockout draw.
The Germans were leading 3-0 at Ghelamco Arena, courtesy of a double from Julian Draxler and Max Kruse, before goals from Sven Kums and Kalifa Coulibaly in the last ten minutes handed the Belgian side a narrow hope in the return leg.
However, playing at home, the German side will be hoping to see Gent out and move into the quarter-final of the tournament. Here is the preview along with predictions, team news, expected line-ups and betting odds:
The AFL Wolfsburg vs Gent game will be played on Tuesday the 8th of March at the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg. The kick-off is scheduled at 7:45 pm GMT (1:15 am on Wednesday IST).
Sebastian Jung, Bas Dost, Paul Seguin and Naldo are injured for the Wolves while Diego Benaglio and Nicklas Bendtner are doubtful for this game. Hecking could once again play Julian Draxler as a false nine up-front and field and unchanged eleven as used against the 2-1 win over Gladbach at the weekend.
The Gent boss Hein Vanhaezebrouck could field the same starting eleven which lost 3-2 in the first leg against Wolfsburg two weeks ago. Hannes Van Der Bruggen, Peter Olayinka and Gustav Wikheim will miss the trip to Wolfsburg due to their respective injuries.
Casteels; Rodriguez, Dante, Knoche, Vieirinha; Arnold, Gustavo, Guilavogui; Kruse, Schurrle, Draxler.
Sels; Foket, Nielsen, Mitrovic, Asare; Neto, Kums; Milicevic, Dejaegere, Simon; Depoitre.
Draxler vs Mitrovic:
Draxler is a gifted player who can take away the game from the opposition within the blink of an eye. Mitrovic should use all his experience and give him no space or time on the ball for the visitors to have a chance of getting anything from this game.
Kums vs Gustavo:
Kums was good against the German side in the first leg and will hope to have a similar impact on the game this mid-week. He will be up against Gustavo in an interesting battle in the midfield that can dictate the terms of the match on the night.
The clash in the round of 16 first leg was the first meeting between Wolfsburg and Gent.
Wolfsburg had never faced a Belgian opponent in European competitions before this.
Meanwhile, Gent have faced German opponents twice before, Eintracht Frankfurt in 1991 edition of Europa League and Werder Bremen in 2001 edition of Intertoto Cup
They are yet to win on German soil, after losing both of their away fixtures.
Gent have so far scored in each and every single Champions League game this season (7 games).
Wolfsburg scored with three of their four shots on target in the first-leg. Julian Draxler scored two of them.
AFL Wolfsburg: 1/2
The Bundesliga outfit is in pole position to make it into the next round and it is up to them to lose the tie from here. Taking a 3-2 lead gives Wolfsburg a big advantage in the second leg to played at home, as they just need a draw or avoid a defeat by more than 1 goal margin from their visitors.
Our Prediction: AFL Wolfsburg 2-0 Gent
