Promising start:
Kings XI Punjab started the campaign in 2008 on a slow note. They lost their first two games before winning the third game. The team soon found the much-needed impetus to do well and went on to win 9 of its next 10 matches. It helped them clinch a berth in the last four. However, they were thoroughly defeated by Chennai Super Kings in the semifinal. The Chennai-based outfit inflicted a heavy 9-wicket defeat on the Kings to end their season.

In 2009, the Kings XI Punjab made a mixed start to the season, winning 4 and losing 4.  The team’s semi-final hopes were crushed after losing to the Chennai Super Kings in their last match. They finished the season at the fifth position, winning seven of the 14 games they played.
The downfall:
For the following few seasons, the Kings XI Punjab failed to deliver well, finishing in the bottom half. In 2010, they finished at the bottom of the league after winning just 4 of the 14 games they played.

In 2011, their performance improved as they managed to win seven game out of 14. However, they still failed to make it to the playoffs, finishing at fifth.

Their fortunes only worsened in the following two seasons. In 2012 and 2013, they finished sixth on both occasions. In 2012, they had won a commendable 8 out of 14 games but missed out on a playoff spot due to the poor net run-rate. In the following season, they once again finished with 8 wins but ended up at the sixth spot.
Brief redemption and fall:
After a handful of forgettable seasons, the Kings XI Punjab roared back to form in 2014. They looked almost unstoppable that year and went on to finish the league stage at the top after winning 11 of their 14 games. They lost  the first Qualifier against Kolkata Knight Riders but went on to make the final after beating Chennai Super Kings in the second Qualifier.

However, they suffered another defeat at the hand of Kolkata Knight Riders in the final and had to remain content with the runners-up finish which is their best result till date.

The performance in 2014 was not a precursor of the things that were to follow in the following seasons. In 2015, they could win just 3 of the 14 games and finished 8th in the league. In the following season, they finished at 8th once again with only 4 wins under their belt. The performance improved in 2017 but it did not guarantee them a place in the playoffs. They ended the season at 5th after winning 7 out of their 14 games.
Home ground:
