I Would Have Done The Same If I Were In Their Place Says Sushil Kumar On Three Walkovers
Sushil Kumar’s win the National Championship wrestling sparked a controversy as the veteran wrestler was awarded a gold medal without even commenting once. He got three walkovers from his junior wrestlers, which saw Sushil moving ahead and winning the gold.
While the sports fraternity has shown mixed results over it, Sushil himself thinks that he is lucky to get so much respect from his fellow wrestlers,
“I returned to the senior national championship after 2009 and wanted to be at my best. I had trained hard for the tournament. I am lucky that my fellow wrestlers respect me so much. Every win is special for me,” he told TOI.
The three wrestlers who gave Sushil walkover were Praveen, Sachin Rathi and Parveen Rana. Reports suggest that Parveen Rana was injured and was not fit to compete with the senior wrestler.
Sushil though thinks that there was nothing controversial in the matter and he would have done the same if he were in their place,
“If I were in their place, and standing against a senior wrestler to compete, I’d have done the same since there is a tradition of giving respect to senior wrestlers. Second, it is also a great strategy of the wrestler and the coach not to waste energy in a fight they know they will not win. In bouts like these, there is a high risk of injury, so I’d say it was a smart move,” he added.
Sushil was making a comeback to the wrestling mat after a brief period of three years. The 2012 Silver Olympic Medallist and 2008 Bronze medallist wrestler would now be eyeing Commonwealth Games 2018, which will be held in Australia in April.
It would also mark his comeback in international wrestling as last year; he was not allowed to compete in Rio Olympics after Narsingh Yadav went for the Olympic bout. However, he too got banned just a few hours before the start of this event.
