Forbidden Door 2022 is going to be the first joint venture presented by All Elite Wrestling and New Japan pro-Wrestling promotions. The event will be held in the hometown of current AEW World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk and he will be featured in one of the headliner matches. The possible lineup of the match was teased during this week’s Dynamite.

Tonight’s episode of AEW’s flagship show started off with the big match set-up for AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2022. A quick-paced trios match kicked things off for the night between CM Punk, Dax Harwood, & Cash Wheeler vs. Max Caster, and The Gunn Club (Austin and Colten Gunn).

CM Punk then said that he knew New Japan Pro Wrestling was in the house and he can offer them the best challenge. Then Hiroshi Tanahashi appeared from the back and made it clear that he would be the one who wants to face Punk at the Forbidden Door 2022.

The storyline makes sense as in the post-show media scrum after AEW Double or Nothing, Punk did mention Tanahashi as one of his top dream opponents for the Forbidden Door 2022 pay-per-view show scheduled for later this month.

“I think [Kazuchika] Okada, [Hiroshi] Tanahashi, [Will] Ospreay, guys like that I’m looking forward to stepping into the ring with,” Punk said. “AEW talent — I always think number one with a bullet is going to be Bryan Danielson …”

AEW Double or Nothing was the same PPV event where Punk captured the AEW world title for the very first time. He defeated Adam ‘Hangman’ Page in a high-octane matchup in the main event of the night. Although it was a memorable night for him, her wrestling techniques were criticized due to a couple of botches.

Now, it appears that Punk’s first title defense will happen at AEWxNJPW Forbidden Door 2022, an event that was officially announced on the April 20 episode of AEW Dynamite. Over 11K tickets were sold via pre-sale in less than 40 minutes on May 5 while the rest of the tickets were out for sale, the very next day. The co-branded pay-per-view is scheduled for Sunday, June 26 from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
