At the Forbidden Door 2022 PPV event, we will receive a new interim AEW World Heavyweight Champion. After the former champion CM Punk announced an injury, AEW announced last night that an interim title-holder will be crowned at the AEW x NJPW collaborative event set to take place on June 26.
This upcoming episode of AEW Dynamite will have a battle royal in the opening segment and the winner will compete against Jon Moxley in the main event to crown a new number-one contender. The winner of that match will then possibly wrestle Hiroshi Tanahashi to crown an interim AEW World Champion at Forbidden Door 2022. However, Tanahasi’s involvement hasn’t been officially announced.

In more news, the new interim champion crowned at Forbidden Door 2022 will then wrestle Punk at a later date in a title unification match whenever Punk returns from injury.
As per the involvements from this week’s Dynamite, Punk was supposed to defend his world title against Tanahasi at Forbidden Door 2022 after the NJPW Superstar wanted to get the first shot at his title. It appears that Tanahasi is still to compete in that title match despite Punk’s absence.
Interim champion at Forbidden Door 2022 will have to face CM Punk
Meanwhile, Punk didn’t directly say he was relinquishing the title. Rather he that he wanted to relinquish it but AEW President Tony Khan wouldn’t let him.
“I told Tony I would relinquish this title, but Tony told me that he believes in CM Punk,” Punk said in his emotional speech at the Toyota Center in Ontario, California. “And he believes this is just a bump in the road, and I tell you god damn it, I needed to hear that.”
More regarding the situation should be clarified when AEW Dynamite airs, this Sunday with the builds for Forbidden Door 2022 continuing on the weekly episode. Meanwhile, the origin of the injury of Punk and the healing timespan continues to be a mystery, for the time being.
Punk’s comments led to a lot of confusion, which was further stretched by Chris Jericho who stated that Punk had relinquished the title. Later on Twitter, Jericho noted that he misspoke while being on commentary. Hence, whoever wins that AEW Title at Forbidden Door will have a date set with Punk when he eventually comes back from the injury.
