The first pay per view event of Smackdown finally took place with seven main show matches. None of the matches was really fabulous but overall, it was a good show. Definitely, it was better than Payback. The biggest upset of the event was the main event. Jinder’s victory was really shocking. A jobber suddenly became WWE champion. They do not do such things very often.
Bruno Sammartino, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, The Undertaker, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, Kane, Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, John Cena, Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and….. Jinder Mahal.
Wrestlers like Roddy Piper, Ted DiBiase, Ricky Steamboat, Jimmy Snuka, Jake Roberts, Owen Hart could never win the WWE championship, and Jinder Mahal is now your WWE champion. Yes, it was a terrible decision to make Jinder champion. Building a main eventer is no easy task, you do not just put a random jobber into the main event scene and make him a champion.
Okay we get it, they want to promote WWE shop in India, so they used their Indian billed superstar. But was there any point in putting the WWE title on his shoulders? He could be a great mid-card champion. Many good storylines could be booked with Jinder being the US champion.
It looks like a bad decision so far, but who knows, maybe one day we recognise this decision. If you are an older WWE fan, you would probably remember the time when Chris Jericho became the WWE champion for the first time. Fans criticised WWE for this decision. But now, we understand that they were right, and we were wrong. Who knows if something similar happens in this case too.
Among the other matches of the night, Kevin Owens vs. AJ Styles was the best match of the night. Both athletes performed well, AJ was superb in this case. Time after time he kept proving himself, hopefully, he will get pushed into the main event scene very soon.
Expectations were really high from Nakamura – Ziggler match. It was good but it couldn’t live up to its expectations. It was fun and physical but in some points, it turned pretty boring. The feud between these two athletes should go on for a while long.
The match between Sami Zayn and Baron Corbin was pretty good too. We have seen some of the fans are complaining about Sami winning the match clean. But what is wrong with it? If you think closely, losing this match would not offend Corbin’s career much, but Sami had to win this match else it would have been a complete burial for him.
Luke Harper vs. Eric Rowan was not a bad match but the fans were not bothered by this match at all. The response from the crowd during the match showed that there was no point of booking the match except filling the card. Enough of this feud, they should stop it immediately and team them up for good.
And the six-woman tag team match; it was not a very good match. The main point of this match was to promote the Welcoming Committee. But we do not know why to make Becky Lynch a scapegoat in every occasion. She lost to Natalya via submission. Come on man this is not fair. It is good that you are promoting the heel side but why are you making them carried by Becky only? Becky fans might not be very happy to see this but it looks like the Irish Lass Kicker does not have a big future in WWE.
