WWE Smackdown - Page 2

A branch of WWE, WWE SmackDown is a professional wrestling television program. Also called SmackDown Live or just SmackDown, it made its debut on April 29, 1999.

Currently, it is broadcast live on Tuesday nights. However, from October 4 next year, it will move back to Fridays. Previously, it was aired on Thursday nights but moved to Friday on September 9, 2005, before returning to Thursdays on January 15, 2015. Then again in July 2016, it was moved to live broadcast on Tuesday night.

SmackDown began its successful journey in the United States on April 29, 1999 through the UPN television network. But in 2006, it began being aired on The CW after the mergence of UPN and WB. A couple of years later, the company moved the show to MyNetworkTV. In 2010, SmackDown was moved to Syfy and to USA Network on January 7, 2016.

Along with RAW, SmackDown is one of WWE's two main weekly programs.

So far, it has been broadcast from 163 arenas, in 148 cities and towns, in seven countries (the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Iraq in 2003 and 2004 for Tribute to the Troops, Japan in 2005, Italy in 2007, and Mexico in 2011).

Initially, the show was not broadcast live The taped episodes premiered a few hours earlier in Ireland and the United Kingdom and a day earlier in Australia, Canada, Singapore, and Philippines than the United States, due to time differences. Earlier this year in October, SmackDown celebrated its 1000th episode.

The early set for SmackDown was oval-shaped called the Ovaltron to distinguish it from the set of RAW which was rectangle-shaped.

In August 2001, the show celebrated its second anniversary and made it memorable by launching new logo and set. The new set consisted of a fist centered above the entrance, and many glass panes along the sides strongly resembling shattered glass. In the following year, the company underwent the 'brand extension'. Consequently, the WWE was divided into two branches. The two divisions were RAW and the SmackDown. Both the branches were formed to compete against each other.

The brand extension was made public during a telecast of RAW on March 18, 2002, and became official on the April 1, 2002 episode of RAW. The wrestlers used to compete exclusively in the branches they were assigned through a draft lottery. However in 2011, the company announced that the wrestlers were no longer exclusive to their respective brand. The move all but ended the brand extension.

On October 14, 2011, SmackDown became the second-longest-running weekly episodic television series of American television history. The list is led by RAW which surpassed the mark way back in 2005.

On October 10, 2014, SmackDown celebrated its 15th Anniversary. The 15th season premiere opened with a new theme, "Centuries" by Fall Out Boy. To help celebrate the 15th anniversary, Stephanie McMahon came out first, then Laurinaitis and Long, respectively, the latter of which kept one-upping each other for the main event of the night until McMahon decided to keep the 15-man tag team match that Long suggested, on the condition Laurinaitis and Long be the captains of each team like at WrestleMania XXVIII.

In May 2016, the company decided to make SmackDown a live show on Tuesday nights. The company took the decision after the re-implementation of the brand extension which resulted in the split of RAW and SmackDown.

On the July 11, 2016 episode of Raw, Vince McMahon named Shane McMahon the commissioner of SmackDown. In the very following week,  Daniel Bryan was announced as the new SmackDown General Manager. On July 22, 2016, General Manager Daniel Bryan revealed the new SmackDown logo on his official Twitter page. On April 10, 2018, SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon announced that Daniel Bryan was back as a full-time WWE wrestler and named Paige the new General Manager.

Network changes:

SmackDown began its highly successful journey in 1999 through the UPN. From 2005, the network aired SmackDown on Friday death slot. UPN received better ratings on Fridays than it did before with its movie night.  In January 2006, UPN renewed SmackDown' for two more years.

On September 22, 2006, Friday Night SmackDown! debuted on The CW. A couple of years later, the show made its debut on MyNetworkTV in the United States. it also featured a new theme-song.  The premiere episode on MyNetworkTV attracted 3.2 million viewers.

SmackDown moved to NBCUniversal in 2010 and made its live premiere on Syfy on October 1, 2010, retaining its Friday night slot. On January 7, 2016, SmackDown moved to Syfy's sister channel, USA Network.  With the move, all top three WWE programs – Raw, SmackDown and Tough Enough – started airing on the same network for the first time.

SmackDown remained on Thursday nights when the show moves from Syfy to USA Network on January 7. The first SmackDown episode on USA Network had 2.75 million viewers. The Thursday night slot was decided to attract more young audience. The move was also taken to have more premium advertising dollars from marketers, who tend to spend more to promote their products, especially film releases, on the night as consumers head into the weekend.

In July 2018, WWE announced that SmackDown would move to Fox beginning October 2019. It is a five-year deal worth a staggerin $205 million-per-year. The deal represents a major increase over USA Network's previous contract for both Raw and SmackDown, which was valued at $150 million. The program will also return to Friday night, with its Fox premiere scheduled for October 4, 2019.

Here are the broadcasting details of SmackDown:

From its inaugural season in 1999 till early 2015,  SmackDown aired in Canada matching the United States airtime. Currently, it is broadcasted on Sportsnet 360. When SmackDown moved back Thursday nights, the show was broadcast on Wednesday nights (with the exception of live episodes) in Canada January 14, 2015 to July 13, 2016, due to national NHL coverage being aired on Sportsnet 360 on Thursday nights. But from July 19, 2016,  SmackDown again started airing in Canada simultaneously with the United States, following SmackDown's move to a live Tuesday night broadcast.

Paige Teases WWE In-Ring Comeback In January 2022

Paige hasn’t wrestled in a long time in the WWE. To be precise, her last match took place in a house show back in December 2017. But she’s making quite the noise to wipe that out from the history books. Going by the recent updates from her, she is definitely underway for an in-ring comeback after that devastating neck injury, following the likes of Daniel Bryan and WWE Hall of Famer Edge.

Paige also promised that she’s not leaving WWE any time soon, but things can always change. In the meantime, she might have a timeline to make that in-ring return, happen. She wants a comeback to the squared circle and henceforth she is sweating it in the gym sessions. This also continues to fuel rumors and speculation on her possible future.

Throwback Thursday: WWE Star Paige Shows Off Assets In Teasing Videos

Paige Teases WWE In-Ring Comeback In January 2022 5

The youngest WWE Divas Champion in history took to Twitter and simply tweeted one word, January. This led to speculation among Paige’s fanbase that she could possibly be coming back to action at January’s annual PPV tradition in WWE, Royal Rumble, although there’s a long road to travel.

Paige intends to stay with the WWE in future

This post could also be unrelated to pro wrestling then again, it came after a tease of return in late August.

“I’m not done yet. [flexed biceps],” she wrote in that tweet, This phrase was then also changed to her Twitter bio.

Paige said during a recent Twitch stream that, “My contract is up in June of next year. Who knows if they would want to give me a new contract? Who’s to say they would want to? If they did, I’d love to have Twitch as a part of the contract.”

In an update, she also addressed the possibility of leaving WWE and made it very clear that it’s probably not happening. “I’m not leaving WWE, not that I know of [laughs]. Did I get fired? I’m still working for WWE. My contract isn’t up yet. I love the WWE.”

Paige’s contract is set to expire in June 2022 and a lot of things can happen until then. From WWE’s part, there’s no approach has been sent to the former champion who was forced to retire in 2018, the night after Wrestlemania 34. Only time will tell how things will unfold between the two parties.

Ex WWE Diva Kelly Kelly Praises Herself In New Set Of Instagram Photos

Kelly Kelly first debuted in the WWE at the age of just 19 and she never thought of working as a part of the ECW. Being the youngest person on the roster at that point, it was pretty tough for her to spend time on the roster especially given how male-dominated the industry used to be back in the days. ECW legend Tommy Dreamer took her under his wing to help her out as she first started with the company.

Gradually, Kelly Kelly became a universal babyface in the WWE and ECW with her Extreme Expose segments. Many of the fans then considered her to be the most beautiful female superstar of all time to have ever stepped her foot inside the squared circle. The belief is still there even after nine years have passed since her WWE departure.

One of the main reasons behind the belief is because Kelly Kelly keeps on posting stunning pictures of herself on Instagram on a regular basis. On the latest occasion, she apparently approved the belief of the WWE Universe about her gorgeous looks.

The diva with real-name, Barbie Blank shared a set of photos in a tiny white top and a pair of blue jeans. The caption of the post was a unique one that stated, “I wanna be like Barbie, The B*tch has everything.” Now her followers can’t agree more enough with the saying, it appears.

Kelly Kelly always maintained excellent rapport with WWE

As mentioned by her in an appearance on the Chasing Glory Podcast hosted by Lillian Garcia, Kelly Kelly mostly liked the character WWE wanted her to portray on TV. She never got involved in backstage politics and not complained about the angles provided to her. But she did have the intimidating feel while playing the exhibitionist character, at first.

“I remember the first night I had to walk out,” Kelly Kelly stated. “We were doing a bikini contest. It was me, two of the other girls in ECW and the originals like Francine. We were in Philly. People were screaming at me ‘You’re a crack whore.’ This was what ECW was about, this is what it was. I remember Paul Heyman and Dreamer were trying to warn me by saying ‘Look, try and block the crowd out and just do your thing.’ They were booing me and saying ‘You suck.’ And I was like I hadn’t done anything. I’m just in a bikini.” (quotes courtesy Wrestling INC)

Becky Lynch has been one of the top attractions of WWE Super Shows since her return at WWE Summerslam 2021. In a recent live event, the reigning WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion defeated Bianca Belair at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York to retain her title. WWE also promoted the show on their social media accounts by posting several pictures of The Man.

However, the event got attention for a different reason. Several videos have surfaced of Becky Lynch mocking and trolling the fans during the house show to solidify her heel character on TV. Once her title defense was over, a video showed that a fan was calling her “a pus*y” as she was leaving through the ramp.

In response, Becky Lynch confronted the fan and talked trash while holding up her title above her head in her trademark style. It was also noticed that the side-plates portion of the Women’s Title from the blue brand was covered with black tapes for some unknown reason. Being a non-televised show, WWE could have used that belt during that Albany event.

Becky Lynch retained against Belair at Albany event

As seen on the show, Becky Lynch played a villain’s role to the crowd in Albany throughout the match. Belair dominated most of the match until she had to digest a loss with a roll-up. The crowd was mostly behind a babyface Belair which was a good thing. At present, these two superstars are slated to compete in a title match at Extreme Rules 2021. They signed a contract this past Friday on SmackDown to make the match official.

WWE Draft 2021 Confirmed To Return In October

WWE Draft 2021 has now been confirmed to take place next month. After a number of speculations and rumors around the date of the event, WWE has finally come up with an official announcement during this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw around the process that will switch things up for the superstars.

A promo aired during the RAW episode from the TD Garden in Boston that officially announced the beginning of the WWE Draft 2021 for the October 1 SmackDown on FOX. It will then be wrapped with the October 4 RAW episode on the USA Network.

WWE Draft 2021 Confirmed To Return In October 86

The October 1 SmackDown was originally scheduled to take place at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, but due to Hurricane Ida, the show was moved to the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, Maryland. The October 4 episode of RAW is now scheduled to take place at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

Possible Reason Behind Big E Becoming New WWE Champion

WWE Draft 2021 date was changed in recent times

The October 4 RAW episode, which is the second night of WWE Draft 2021 was also supposed to be the RAW 30th season premiere. But WWE hasn’t confirmed about it, as of this writing. Per the previous reports, the draft season will also begin the King of the Ring and Queen of the Ring tournaments for the WWE male and female superstars. There’s also no official update on the same.

Andrew Zarian of Mat Men wrestling podcast reports that Big E winning the WWE title was initially planned for the original WWE Draft 2021 date of RAW. But then it was preponed to this week as WWE wanted to offer something special to their viewers against Monday Night Football. This was also a last-minute decision to increase RAW ratings since AEW Dynamite beat WWE RAW in the 18-49 demo ratings by a very small margin, last week.

WWE Draft 2021 Confirmed To Return In October 87

Big E was also rumored to be switched to Raw in WWE Draft 2021. However, with the WWE Title win, he is already a part of the red brand as The New Day has reunited on the same brand once again. Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods celebrated with him for the title win as Raw went off the air. The group has been apart since the 2020 WWE Draft.

Big E
courtesy Instagram

Possible Reason Behind Big E Becoming New WWE Champion

As seen in the main event of this week’s RAW, Big E successfully cashed-in his Money in The Bank 2021 contract on Bobby Lashley to become the new WWE Champion. Since E is a Smackdown superstar, it was a surprising decision to see the cash-in happening on Raw, especially given the fact that he was rumored to be drafted on the red brand in the upcoming edition of Raw. WWE reportedly changed plans for the cash-in happening, as per the reports following this week’s Raw.

Some fans believe that the title win was indeed a last-minute decision to increase RAW ratings since AEW Dynamite beat WWE RAW in the 18-49 demo ratings by a very small margin, last week.

Possible Reason Behind Big E Becoming New WWE Champion 103

To keep things interesting on Raw in Boston, Big E captured the WWE Title from Bobby Lashley right after Lashley retained his title over RAW Tag Team Champion Randy Orton in the original main event of the night.

In an update, Andrew Zarian of Mat Men reports that the WWE Title change was initially slated to happen for the original WWE Draft date for RAW but then it was preponed for this week. This was the reason that Lashley vs. Orton was also pulled off Extreme Rules 2021, earlier this week.

Big E is back on WWE Raw brand

WWE confirmed on this week’s RAW that the 2021 WWE Draft will begin with the October 1 SmackDown from the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, and will then end with the October 4 RAW from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

That being said, Big E will now be joining the Raw brand meaning that The New Day has reunited on the same brand. Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods celebrated with E to send Raw off the air. The group has disbanded since the 2020 WWE Draft who only made special appearances together since then.

Possible Reason Behind Big E Becoming New WWE Champion 104

In more news to the title switch, Big E’s title win was also a move to retain WWE’s viewership against Monday Night Football. WWE came up with the teasing as the superstar announced on Twitter that he plans on cashing-in his MITB contract on the show from Boston.

“Let’s let that cat out of the bag…I intend on cashing in my Money in the Bank contract tonight and cashing in to become WWE Champion.”

Then Big E continued hyping up the cash-in throughout the night in order to keep the anticipation high around the show.

Nikki Bella was in attendance at WWE’s Summerslam event on August 21st although she couldn’t be present in the actual event for some undisclosed reasons. Bianca Belair was scheduled to defend the Smackdown Women’s Championship against Sasha Banks on that night but then she got squashed by a returning Becky Lynch to lose her belt.

While speaking during the SummerSlam afterparty, Nikki Bella criticized Belair’s weak booking on that night,

“You have someone like Bianca who is such an incredible talent, and you can’t help but get frustrated when you see moments like that for a championship that meant so much and was lost within seconds. So I have to admit for this SummerSlam, there truly wasn’t anything that was my favorite.”

AJ Lee hasn’t been seen much in public since she announced retirement from WWE in-ring competition. This left the fans also wondering whether this could mark an end to the hiatus that AJ has been in over the past few years. Apparently, that may not be happening.

The 34-year-old AJ Lee has been away from WWE since retiring in 2015 who also noted in her memoir that she decided to step back from competition due to permanent damage to her cervical spine and owing to the fact that she had fulfilled her goals in professional wrestling. She also mentioned how she got caught in the middle of the issues between Punk and WWE in 2014 since the latter made his exit from the company.

AJ Lee has a problem with her neck

The former Straight Edge Leader offered a negative response while mentioning that the neck injury would never allow AJ Lee to come back to professional wrestling,

“I just want to say, no,” Punk said. “Just because [of] her neck. The reason she stopped wrestling is because of her neck. She’s got a bad neck, you know. I wouldn’t want her to jeopardize [her] health and neither would she, so we’ll put an end to that rumor right now.”
