It was back in 2017 that WWE signed Mike Bennett and Maria Kanellis under multi-year contracts. The two came to the company with a lot of hypes. They were given The Power Of Love gimmick to garner tons of heat from the fans. The good times for them didn’t last long at all because they went downward direction in pretty much, no time.
Multiple reasons apparently worked against them. Mike’s addiction was obviously one of them. But the one who took the initiative to bring Mike and Maria Kanellis into the biggest professional wrestling banner is still very much sorry about the whole thing. That man is the current SmackDown Superstar Kevin Owens.
While speaking to the DropKick podcast, Maria Kanellis firstly revealed that WWE intended to make Mike Kanellis a singles star on the roster. We did see how that plan had never worked out didn’t work out. She added how Kevin Owens is still apologizing for campaigning in WWE to sign the couple.
“Kevin Owens was fighting for us to come into WWE, he still apologizes, but the plan was to build Mike as a singles wrestler. Somewhere along the way, and I have a feeling it has a lot to do with him coming out with his addiction and then me announcing that I was pregnant. I think they just kind of took a step back from us and everything they wanted to do with us, but I say this to Mike all the time that the second week we were there, we were already dead in the water.”
Kevin Owens fought for Mike and Maria Kanellis
Being a former Universal Champion, Kevin Owens has some pull backstage as well as a food rapport with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon. Not each of the ideas does work out well though like this one.
As a result, Mike and Maria Kanellis were both released from the WWE on April 15th, 2020 during the cost-cutting process in the pandemic. They are now under a contract with Ring of Honor promotion. Although, their deal won’t long last.
While speaking on Table Talk, Mike Bennett discussed his ROH deal and he disclosed how his contract alongside wife Maria Kanellis has inked a deal that only lasts for June 2021. After that period, they’ll have the options to hear from different other promotions. Jim Ross has a ton of praise for the first-ever pregnant champion of WWE. Hence, AEW could try to bring them under their banner.
