King of the Ring was organised as a pay per view event till 2002. After that it started to be aired on weekly shows. In 2006, a tournament by the same name was organised for SmackDown exclusively. Booker T won the tournament by defeating Bobby Lashley on the finals.
The tournament returned after two years, this time it was one by William Regal. In 2010 the tournament was organised again, Sheamus won it this time. After that it took five years for WWE to reorganize the tournament. Wade Barrett aka Bad News Barrett won it this time. The last time the tournament was organised was back in 2019, the tournament was won by Baron Corbin. Even though he lost his crown to Shinsuke Nakamura recently.
This year another tournament has been rumoured. There is a rumour of a first ever Queen of the Ring tournament as well. And both tournament will start from October 8th and October 11th respectively. The finals of both tournaments are rumoured to be taking place at Saudi Arabia.
Xavier Woods who is a former eleven times WWE Tag Team Champion recently spoke to The Danger Zone where he talked about the importance of King of the Ring tournament to him. He said;
“That’s why I want it so bad. Because, yeah, it’s cool to have the crown and do a gimmick and all this stuff with it. But on a deeper note as like a human as Austin Watson, I want that test so that I can know.
“So I’ve talked all this stuff about King of the Ring and all this stuff. But if I went out and just underperformed. Alright, cool. I know now and I’ll shut up. But like, you want a draw? That to me is it.
“Winning one match? Anybody can win one match on a given day, winning a full tournament on one night? That’s not something that happens at random to anyone.”
