Manchester City and Liverpool played out a 1-1 stalemate at the Etihad to throw the top-four race wide open.
A hugely entertaining game that saw both the team getting plenty of chances to secure all the three points, Sergio Aguero cancelled out James Milner’s penalty to rescue a point for his team.
In a fiercely-fought first-half that ended goalless, City began the game in a dominant fashion with David Silva hitting wide after Leroy Sane’s cross was blocked by Simon Mignolet. Liverpool responded soon as Sadio Mane raced free from Nicolas Otamendi with just Willy Caballero to beat, but the forward tumbled under the challenge from the defender. Mane appealed for a spot-kick but referee Michael Oliver waved play on.
City came agonisingly close to open the scoring five minutes from time but both Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho failed to poke in a David Silva cross from close range. Caballero then kept the game level before the break with two saves from Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino.
The deadlock was finally broken when Firmino was fouled by Gael Clichy inside the box and Milner made no mistake from the resulting penalty. The Reds could have doubled their lead shortly after but Firmino missed to find the back of the net with only the goalie to beat. Pep Guardiola’s men then drew level in the 69th minute when Aguero turned in Kevin De Bruyne’s brilliant cross. Both the teams had chances to kill the game in the closing stages but De Bruyne struck the post while Lallana and Aguero missed absolute sitters as the game ended on 1-1.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the match:
Today was arguably Wijnaldum's best away performance for Liverpool so far this season. Has been performing consistently the past few months.

Man City fans booing Milner is ridiculous, he left to play regularly
Liverpool fans booing Sterling is ridiculous, he just got a better job

Guardiola is a tactical genius but he doesn't need to be one to know that the best way of getting at Liverpool is down their left.

Aguero needs his usual 5 chances to score one goal.

We need to start taking bets on when Guardiola is going to run into the field and murder Aguero. It's going to happen.

Blimey, Aguero… I'd have buried that. #MCFCvLFC
