Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews has joined Delhi Daredevils camp ahead of their clash against Kings XI Punjab. Mathews straightaway landed in the practice session of Delhi Daredevils at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium.
He attended the optional practice session and did a light workout until the time other players were in the nets. The moment the players went away, Mathews was involved in a practice session with the head coach of the side Rahul Dravid.
Dravid gave some throw downs to Mathews. Meanwhile, the head coach continued to alter with Mathews’s backlift, elbow position and stance to brush up his skills. Mathews will have a direct competition with New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson for a place in the side. He might be considered for a game straight away.
Mathews had a late arrival in the camp, as he could not recover from the hamstring injury. He also missed the ODI and T20I series against Bangladesh due to the injury. Earlier, it was expected that Mathews might miss a big part of the IPL season but he has recovered soon to join the squad earlier than it was expected.
Mathews has been missing from international cricket since T20I series against South Africa earlier this year. He went on to miss final T20I and five matches ODI series as well.
Later, he failed to recover well in time and went on to miss three matches T20I series against Australia as well.
With a comeback in the T20 league, Mathews also has to prove his fitness so as to make a return to the national side for the Champions Trophy 2017.
Delhi Daredevils will take on Kings XI Punjab in their next game of the season on April 15, which will be their first home game as well. Meanwhile, there is another good news in the bag as Shreyas Iyer has been declared fit and is available to take part in Delhi’s next tie.
