When Mumbai Indians came out to bat, for once it looked like their winning run might end at the Wankhede by none other than Delhi Daredevils, as even after having a good start, the team faltered in between and lost momentum.
The quick wickets of in-form batsman Nitish Rana and skipper Rohit Sharma added to the pressure but a wise and time-consuming partnership of 24 runs between Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya helped the team to get stable.
Soon, Hardik Pandya came to the crease and played a crucial knock of 24 to steer the team and finally, Mumbai Indians ended the campaign with a score of 142 on the board. The total looked on a lower side but a brilliant piece of bowling and fielding effort from Mumbai Indians sealed the game for the home side.
Mitchell McCleneghan was the one who tumbled Delhi’s top order, as in his first two overs, he sent back the three classic batsmen of Delhi to break their dreams to chase down the total.
The wickets continued to fall but there was a bit of twist in the tail when Kagiso Rabada and Chris Morris shared 91 runs to generate some hopes of a win. However, they failed to pull off a heist and Mumbai Indians won the game by a margin of 14 runs.
With this win, Mumbai Indians moved one step closer to qualifying for the next round of the league.
Here is what winning captain Rohit Sharma said after the game –
Rohit Sharma:
“We were outstanding with the ball. We knew that we could defend any total out here, we’ve done it in the past and have the bowlers to do the job for us. It was one of those games where we couldn’t kick on with the bat but I do not want to blame them for we’ve done very well in the past. The crowd support has been amazing, they’ve rightly been the 12th man for us. I hope they’ll keep coming back in large numbers in the next few games as well. The wicket seemed slightly slow and that is what we spoke about in the dressing room. There was no dew tonight, it is very unpredictable to determine but we wanted to lift ourselves up with the ball.”
