Real Madrid were beaten at the Bernabeu by a gritty Barcelona side who put in a strong performance right until the final whistle to snatch all three points late in the game.
Lionel Messi came up with a brace but Ivan Rakitic stole the show with a sumptuous goal from the outside the box in the second half, as Barcelona kept themselves in the race to the La Liga title.
While James Rodriguez and Casemiro also found the back of the net, the biggest incident involving a Real Madrid player was the sending off of star defender Sergio Ramos.
The Spanish defender had a rather troublesome night and plunged into an unnecessary tackle, with his studs in the air, as he caught Messi at the half way line.
The referee had no hesitation in showing Ramos a straight red a suspending the Spanish defender for the rest of the game in the middle of the second period.

Though Real Madrid did find the back of the net even when they were down to 10-men, they could not hold on to a point without their talismanic defender and fell to a defeat.
Ramos, however, did not leave the field without making a fuzz out of it.
He was seen gesturing and asking Gerard Pique to stop talking while walking off the pitch and was also clapping sarcastically at someone, who is not clear yet.
The Barcelona defender, a constant presence on social media, is known for his comments about everything Madrid in the past so Ramos did not want to keep quite in his home turf.
But Pique, after the game, felt that Ramos will understand his mistake after going back home and that he will regret what he said the next day.
On the attitude of the Madrid man, Pique was clear: “When he gets home he will regret it because it’s a clear read card, he went with both feet off the ground.”
“What it is is that here they are used to very permissive referees and today that’s not been the case.”
Speaking about winning at the Bernabeu, Pique added: “it”s a really fair result. It’s difficult to win at a ground like the Bernabeu, but in general, we were superior. We will fight until the end to win La Liga.

“We came into the game in a difficult situation, but we knew that doing things well we could win and we’ve shown that. I have really good memories of this ground…”
He also went on to talk about Lionel Messi and his importance to this Barcelona side.
“It couldn’t be any other way. He’s such a special player that I hope it’s many more years until he retires,” Pique added.
