After being on the receiving end of a fine batting display from Rising Pune Supergiant’s openers-Ajinkya Rahane and Rahul Tripathi, Mumbai Indians made a brilliant comeback to restrict the Pune-based outfit to 160 for six in the allotted 20 overs.
After being invited to bat first, Rahane and Tripathi gave the visitors a flying start by adding 76 runs in 57 balls. However, their innings totally derailed once Rahane was dismissed by Karn Sharma for 38.
17 runs later, Karn Sharma removed Tripathi too for 45 before Harbhajan Singh picked up the prized scalp of Steve Smith.
A 22-run stand between Ben Stokes and MS Dhoni steadied the ship but just when everyone was hoping to see some fireworks from the duo, Stokes was sent back by Mitchell Johnson. Dhoni, who had scored a match-winning 61 in the last game, also failed with the bat, scoring just seven runs off 11 balls.
Steve Smith’s men were looking well set to post a below par total before Manoj Tiwary played a quickfire knock of 22 runs from just 13 balls to guide his team to a respectable total.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the innings:
Brilliant innings by underrated Tiwary. He seems like that guy, even his father undermines him. "Papa kehte hain, maybe naam karega" #IPL

Siva says Dhoni is a great finisher in a match where #RPS isn't chasing. Richie Beanud should come out of his grave & slap him. #MIvRPS

You have to think #RPS are short. But then, we thought so about @mipaltan against #Daredevils & about #KKR against #RCB.

Manoj Tiwary has once again done what RPS expect Stokes to do for them with that price tag. Could be differential. 22 in 13.

Splendid bowling by Mumbai in the last 6-7 overs. Pune choked and are probably 20 runs short. But in T20, who knows, this may 20 too many!

The way Pune's innings sinks down after a good start they should rename their team to Falling Pune Supergiant #IPL

MS will now look to bat out now, could have sent Manoj to keep going? Stokes too will take his time here.

Dhoni, of course, has an unbreakable, unforgettable link with Wankhede and Mumbai for this special moment! https://t.co/XyFe1thXk9
