Virat Kohl’s lone battle went in vain as Rising Pune Supergiant defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 61 runs to all but end their hopes of making it to the last four in this season of IPL.
Chasing a modest 157, the Royal Challengers went off to the worst possible start with their newly-promoted opener Travis Head departing in the second over. A 21-run stand between Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers calmed down the nerves in the RCB dressing room for a while before the latter’s drive went straight into the hands of Manoj Tiwary.
11 runs later, the visitors found themselves in more trouble when a terrible miscommunication led to Kedar Jadhav’s run-out. ( Watch: Kedar Jadhav’s Carelessness Culminates In Comical Run-Out)
Sachin Baby (2), Stuart Binny (1) and Pawan Negi (3) also failed to contribute anything substantial in the match, as the runners-up of last year found themselves reeling at 61 for six in the 13th over.
Virat Kohli was holding firm at the other end but a lack of support from his teammates never allowed him to go for the big shots. The India skipper was the ninth RCB batsman to be dismissed. He scored 55 of 48 balls. RCB eventually managed to score 96 for nine
Earlier, useful contributions from Rahul Tripathi (37), Steve Smith (45) and Manoj Tiwary (44) had propelled the Pune-based team to 157 for six in the allotted 20 overs.
Pawan Negi was RCB’s most impressive bowler with figures of one for 18 from his four overs while Adam Milne and S Aravind also bowled brilliantly in the death overs, as Steve Smith’s men managed only 46 runs in the last five overs despite having MS Dhoni and Manoj Tiwary in the middle.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the match:
If there is one batsmen who can make a game of this, it has to be @imVkohli . It's as good as over now.#RPSvRCB

This is a spectacular coming apart of a fancied team. Think #RCB will look very different next year. Will have to rebuild around @imVkohli

Falling short of good totals everytime and still not giving Faf a proper chance. Thats waste of resources.
