Chasing a mammoth total of 209 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the high-flying Kolkata Knight Riders needed a fast and solid opening stand to kick start their chase on a good note.
However, the defending champions did not allow them to get off to a good start, as Mohammed Siraj dismissed the dangerous Sunil Narine for only one.
The wicket was surely a big setback but the Knight Riders would not have worried too much as Narine’s departure brought together the in-form duo of Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa.
The pair had shared century partnership in the last two games and would have desperately hoped to put on another great show. But the huge asking rate, it seems, affected Gambhir’s batting, as the Knight Riders skipper played an unusual shot to get out for 11.
The in-form India opener was clearly struggling to up the ante and when he failed to score off the first two deliveries of the third over bowled by Siddarth Kaul, he went for a wild heave and only managed to hit the ball high towards mid-wicket.
The ball, meanwhile, was looking set to land in between three fielders who ran from their position to pouch the rare opportunity. But the Sunrisers fielders communicated well before Rashid Khan took a good catch to send back Gambhir.
Here is a clip of Gambhir’s dismissal:
