Footage from the earlier night was shown where Jinder Mahal was having a photo shoot with the WWE championship. Shane McMahon took the title away from him as he said that he had to earn the title and made a match for him against Sami Zayn for the night.
The show started as Shane McMahon came out to the arena. Shane entered the ring and welcomed the newest member of Smackdown WWE United States champion Chris Jericho. Shane welcomed Jericho and told him that he would be defending the title against Kevin Owens on that night.
AJ Styles came out to the arena. AJ welcomed Jericho on Smackdown. He said that things changed a lot since they met last time. He reminded him of Y2-AJ days and said that he would love to take the title away from him at Backlash if he still could remain champion after the night. Jericho said that he made Owens tap out last night, and he would do the same again.
Kevin Owens interrupted now. He said that he would take what rightfully belonged to him. If Jericho thought that WrestleMania and the festival of friendship was bad, he had no idea what was coming to him on that night. Owens wanted AJ out of the ring since it was not about him. AJ went out of the ring and attacked Owens. The referees and Shane came out to separate them.
Match 1 – Sami Zayn vs. Jinder Mahal
The match was booked for some eight minutes and it was an enjoyable match. Jinder had to work really hard to be a real main eventer. But he is doing good. The match was okay, it was entertaining, and we expected Jinder to win this match. Even though he cheated to win, but a victory over Sami Zayn is definitely a good push.
Winner – Jinder Mahal
Backstage Becky Lynch met Natalya, Carmella, Tamina and James Ellsworth. Natalya told her if anyone was getting title opportunities that should be Becky rather than Charlotte. She promised her that they had Becky’s back and requested her to join them. Becky said that she would think about it.
Match 2 – Aiden English vs. Tye Dillinger
Tye got finally booked in a match after two weeks and it was a rematch from his last match. The match was booked for only one minute and it was organised to promote Tye Dillinger. It was an easy win for Tye.
Winner – Tye Dillinger
Backstage Charlotte Flair was being interviewed by Dasha Fuentes where she got attacked by Natalya, Carmella and Tamina. They beat her down.
Match 3 – Charlotte Flair and WWE Smackdown Women’s champion Naomi vs. Carmella and Natalya
Charlotte was scheduled to be Naomi’s tag team partner as but she could not join the match at first because of the beat down she was given earlier on the night. But she came out after a while and joined the match as Naomi’s tag team partner. Carmella pinned Naomi with a roll up pin after James Ellsworth distracted her. After the match, the Welcoming Committee started beating down Naomi and Charlotte. Fans were expecting Becky to come out for the save as they chanted her name. Becky Lynch finally came out. She first pretended to be joining them, but then attacked them. She was coming out strong but got nailed by a superkick from Tamina. They beat down Becky too.
Winners – Natalya and Carmella
Match 4 – Sin Cara vs. Dolph Ziggler
The match was booked for five minutes and it was organised to promote Dolph Ziggler as a legit competitor for Shinsuke Nakamura which is a good decision we say. Ziggler pinned Sin Cara with the Super Kick.
Winner – Dolph Ziggler
Pre-taped promo for the Breezango was shown, not enough to promote them as legit no 1 contenders for the tag team championships
Main Event – WWE United States championship – Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens
So the rumours were true. Jericho won at Payback just to join Smackdown. And Kevin Owens is not going back to Raw and he is staying at Smackdown. Owens won the match. It was not a very good match, Owens badly beat down Jericho, and looked like this was it for Jericho. He was rumoured to take time off of WWE, this has to be the time. Even after the match, Owens beat down Jericho, which was enough to give Jericho a kayfabe injury.
Winner – Kevin Owens (New Champion)
