While there is absolutely no denying the fact that the players attempting acrobatic saves on the boundary ropes can result in spectacular catches, it can also lead to nasty injuries and the premonition was about to get real in the ongoing match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rising Pune Supergiant when Steve Smith somehow managed to escape a serious injury after a nasty injury with teammate Ben Stokes.
The mishap occurred in the penultimate over of KKR’s innings when Nathan Coulter-Nile swung a Jaydev Unadkat delivery towards the deep mid-wicket region. In the meantime, both Stokes and Smith ran towards their left and right respectively to catch the ball. However, both the players were watching the ball and not each other which led to the bad-looking collision.
A leaping Stokes caught the ball first and as he was trying to send the ball into the field of play to save a boundary, Smith rammed into him. The Supergiant skipper was floored as soon as he collided with the Englishman before his head banged against an ad board. The whole accident was looking really bad but fortunately Smith stood up and gave the thumbs-up, much to the relief of everyone.
Here is the clip of that mishap:
