The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) today announced the 15-man Team India squad for upcoming Champions Trophy which is scheduled to start from June in England.
India will enter the tournament as the defending champions after having won the last edition way back in 2013. The tournament later did not take place for three years before it was announced late in 2016 that it will make a comeback in the international calendar.
Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma were the most notable inclusions in the touring party which will be led by Virat Kohli. The duo is set for a comeback after being out of the team due to lack of form and injury problems respectively.
Another huge gain is the return of bowling spearhead Mohammad Shami. The right arm fast bowler was also out of action due to injury concerns and recently made a comeback in the IPL.
Leg-spinner Amit Mishra has been neglected while KL Rahul was forced to sacrifice his place due to the injury he suffered after the Border – Gavaskar series. Mandeep Singh has also been left out with the return of Dhawan. The rest of the squad bears the same look to the 15-man unit that was selected to play against England in the home series last year.
While the team picked looks very high quality, fans, however, were left upset after few of the speculated names could not make the cut. Rishabh Pant, Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa and Gautam Gambhir were some of the players who were expected to break into the squad. However, the selectors took the safe route and did not fiddle much with the original unit that has been together for some time now.
The news comes as a huge relief for cricket fans not only in India but all over the world. The participation of the Indian team in the multi-nation tournament was surrounded by dark clouds owing to the ongoing tussle of power between BCCI and cricket’s governing body ICC.
The tension among the cricket fans rose to its peak when the BCCI bluntly skipped the deadline of announcing the squads for the Champions Trophy (April 25). The BCCI constantly tried to use the Champions trophy as the bargaining tool and make the ICC bend to its demands.
The bone of contention was due to the latest revenue sharing model proposed by ICC which effectively cut BCCI’s shares to nearly half of what it was actually receiving from the older 2014 revenue model.
The cricketing boards, however, voted against BCCI’s demands in the ICC meet held in Dubai and the revamped revenue model, as well as the new regulations, were passed.
India Squad For Champions Trophy 20117:

Twitter did not look amused with BCCI’s approach and slammed the board for ignoring some well-performing talents.
