Ahead of the One-Day International series against England and the subsequent ICC Champions Trophy, South Africa skipper, AB de Villiers has insisted he is not concerned about his form.
The 33-year old had a forgettable Indian Premier League this year where he only managed to show his brilliance on few occasions. After missing the first couple of games with a back injury, the right-handed batsman marked his comeback in grand style, scoring a blistering 89 off just 46 balls against Kings XI Punjab. However, he failed to sustain that momentum thereafter and did not register a single fifty in the next 8 games before leaving the tournament for national duty. In 9 matches, he managed to cross the 20-run mark only thrice while he was dismissed for a single digit on three occasions. Even in his last match, he was out for only 10 against Kolkata Knight Riders as he scored only 216 runs at a modest average of 27.
But despite his indifferent form in the IPL, the Protea star is confident of getting the big runs in the upcoming matches.
“I’m not worried, I had a few decent knocks (in the IPL)… I started off really well and four games later I had a decent game again,” de Villiers told reporters ahead of the Proteas departure to England.
“I always felt in good form. I’m not too worried about it honestly, I’m really excited to move forward, I’m hitting the ball as well as ever so I think there are some big scores to come.”
South Africa will play a three-match ODI series along with two practice matches against England. The warm-up games will be played on the 19th and 21st of May while the series starts on 24th May. The upcoming series against the Three Lions will serve as the much-needed preparation series for de Villiers as well as his side before the Champions Trophy which starts on June 1 in England.
South Africa will begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Sri Lanka on June 3.
