England all-rounder Chris Woakes was forced to leave the field midway after suffering a side strain during the first innings of the Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh at The Kennington Oval, London.
Woakes opened the attack for England on Thursday and bowled two overs before walking away immediately after the completion of the 3rd over.
He started off really well and had given just four runs off the couple of overs he was able to bowl early in the morning. This untimely injury problem has left Morgan in a fix, as he is left with only four frontline seamers apart from the offie Moeen Ali. His absence meant Jake Ball was brought into action early on.
England team are already without leg-spinner Adil Rashid after opting for an extra seamer. This means Joe Root, the part time off spinner, may be seen in action as the innings progresses.
England would hope nothing is serious with Woakes. The all-rounder has been one of the most prized assets of the team and anything serious to him would shake up the plans for the hosts.
Earlier, England won the toss and chose to bowl first. Woakes began the proceeding with a tight first overs which ended as a maiden. The batting side needed a few overs to get adjusted to the seam movement before they started accumulating the runs at a healthy pace.
The opening pair of Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar gained fluency and took Bangladesh past the 50 runs mark after hammering 16 runs off the 11th over by Jake Ball.
The stand, however, came to an end in the following over, as Stokes drew the first blood, snapping the wicket of Sarkar. England was able to pick another after a gap of seven overs. Bangladesh lost Imrul Kayes just five runs before the 100 runs mark.
Bangladesh can be optimistic as opener Tamim Iqbal is still standing strong and steering his team with a healthy run rate. The left-hander has currently finished his half-century and has Mushfiqur Rahim for the company.
The challengers have got off to a healthy start despite losing two wickets and are expected to reach a respectable total if things continue in the same fashion.
