Doing complete justice to their tags of being the tournament favourites, England became the first team to qualify for the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. Up against New Zealand on an overcast day in Cardiff, the hosts were simply phenomenal in all departments and more importantly, in testing conditions. It was a complete team performance from Eoin Morgan’s men, as they registered their second win in as many games to advance to the next round.
After being put in to bat, England responded positively with the bat as half-centuries from Alex Hales and Joe Root set the base for a big total. There was some struggle in the middle order, but a flurry from Jos Buttler and a rapid half-century propelled them to score above 300.
In pursuit of a steep total, the Blackcaps was dent early on, as Luke Ronchi was dismissed for a first-ball duck by Jake Ball. To a great extent, skipper Kane Williamson was the only batsman who displayed any zeal in the middle, and once he was dismissed off a vicious delivery, the New Zealand innings faltered.
Eventually, the hosts won by 87 runs, as Liam Plunkett ended up with four wickets, cleaning up the lower order. Fans on Twitter reacted to the one-sided affair, and below are some of the tweets.
New Zealand really need someone to take some load of Williamson. Guptill, Taylor and Broom, all around him are doing little.

Every Pakistani batsman between the age of 14 and 40 should be shown this Williamson innings every day for the rest of their lives.

@StarSportsIndia @BLACKCAPS If Williamson gets out like it was Tendulkar years ago for our India, the whole situation changes in a whisker.
