With Danushka Gunathilaka and Kusal Mendis going great guns for Sri Lanka in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy match against India, the defending champions needed a moment of brilliance from somewhere to break the brilliant partnership and it came courtesy of none other than Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Chasing a daunting 321, Sri Lanka had begun poorly with Niroshan Dickwella departing after scoring just 7 but the island nation took charge of the proceedings when Gunathilaka and Mendis stitched together a magnificent partnership. Barring a few uncontrolled shots, the duo batted with utmost ease and when none of the frontline bowlers managed to break the partnership, captain Virat Kohli took the onus on himself. And although he did not provide the breakthrough; the much-needed dismissal came in his very first over when Dhoni affected a brilliant run-out.
The incident occurred in the 28th over when the duo had already added 159 runs for the second wicket. However, the batsmen threw away their good work with a silly decision of stealing an unnecessary run. Kohli’s delivery was worked to backward-square-leg by Gunathilaka and the left-handed batsman called for the second. However, it turned out to be a poor decision as Umesh Yadav sent in a fast, flat and right beside the stumps. And as expected, Dhoni did the rest in style.
