England’s skipper Eoin Morgan has become only the third player from England to score 5000 runs in One-Day Internationals. The Ireland-born left-handed batsman, who began his career with his native country, reached the landmark when he crossed the 5-run mark in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy semifinal against Pakistan.
The 30-year old made his ODI debut for Ireland in 2006 and played 23 matches, scoring 744 runs at an average of 35.42 before making his ODI debut for England in 2009 against West Indies. So far, he has amassed 5744 runs in 184 matches out of which 5000 have come for the Three Lions in 162 matches at an average of 39.37 including 10 centuries and 29 half-centuries.
The other two England players to cross the 5000-run mark in 50-over cricket is Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood. Bell is the leading run-scorer for England with 5416 runs in 161 matches followed by Collingwood’s 5092 runs in 197 matches. Interestingly, Morgan is the only active player in England’s top 10 leading run-scorers in the ODIs. Ian Bell has not retired yet but he is not into the mix of things as of now

*Stats updated till Morgan was batting on 5.
Coming to the match, England were 93 for 2 in 20 overs in the first semi-final at Cardiff. Morgan was batting on 5 while his partner Joe Root was playing on 31. After being asked to bat first, the hosts got off to a poor start when their in-form opener Alex Hales was sent back by Rumman Raees for only 13. A 46-run partnership between Jonny Bairstow and Root steadied the ship before the former was dismissed by Hasan Ali for 43.
