The 40-year old World Cup history has seen a lot of teams scoring heavily against the opposition on many occasions. Like in the ICC World Cup 2011, riding on Virender Sehwag’s brilliant knock of 175, India propelled to 370/4 against Bangladesh in the opening match at Dhaka. Australia, the four time World Champions, decimated the Indian bowlers by scoring 359/2 in the finals of the ICC World Cup 2003 (at Johannesburg).
Going by this stat, South Africa, on March 3rd, recorded the second highest total in World Cup history by scoring 411/4 against Ireland (in CWC’15) at Canberra. This was also their highest total in World Cup against any opposition. Electing to bat first, Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis made light work of Ireland bowlers and brought up their hundreds before David Miller and Rilee Rossouw hit some lusty blows at the end to help South Africa post this huge total.
This was the second time in this World Cup that South Africa scored 400. The first time they did it was against West Indies at Sydney, where they scored 408/5 all thanks to AB de Villiers’s magnificient knock of 162 off just 66 balls.
