T20 World Cup 2018 Deferred Till 2020 1

West Indies cricket team, the current T20 World Cup champions can continue their champions dance for three more years as the next edition of T20 World Cup is all set to be deferred and pushed to the year 2020, a source in ICC told PTI,

“Yes, it is true that we are skipping with World T20 edition in 2018. Look, no venue was decided. The primary reason is there are too many bilateral series happening between member nations. It was not possible to schedule the tournament in 2018. Yes, the tournament will return in 2020. It could be South Africa or Australia. The other reason apart from the bilateral series was that with too many ICC events on the anvil, the member nations were also of the view that it needed to be spaced out,” the source said.

Though the talks of the tournament being scrapped started in the year 2016 itself still, ICC is yet to come up with an official announcement even as just there is one year to go. ICC is yet to take a clear stand on this matter but with an official of the parent body of all cricket association in the world confirming the news, it looks like the next edition is all set to be played in 2020. The source also revealed that South Africa or Australia might be the host country.

It was in the year 2009 when South Africa last hosted an ICC event in form of Champions Trophy whereas Australia jointly hosted ICC World Cup 2015 with New Zealand.  India was the host country of T20 World Cup 2016, which West Indies won.

Coming to Champions Trophy, there were talks of Champions Trophy being scrapped off in 2017 for ICC Test Championship. But an opposition from many nations saw the Test championship being cancelled, which meant hat ICC Champions Trophy was given a green signal. As per the latest development, India will host the ICC Champions Trophy 2021 but nothing has been made official yet.
