West Indies vs India 2017: Windies Retain Same Squad For First Two ODIs 1

Windies have retained the same squad for the first two ODIs of the five-match series against India, which kicks off on June 23.

The same squad meant that there was no Shanon Gabriel in the side, who was sidelined for the third and the final ODI against Afghanistan due to an injury, which was washed out.

His replacement Kesrick Williams was retained in the squad. Along with him, Roston Chase was too able to save his place, as there was a fear of him being dropped after his two poor innings of score of 0 and nine against Afghanistan but selectors gave him a longer rope to prove himself against India, a team against which he scored his first century in only his second Test.

The first two ODIs of the five-match ODI series will be played on June 23 and 25 at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad. Sir Vivian Richards Stadium will host next two ODIs following a conclusion of 50 over series at Sabina Park, Jamaica. The only T20I game will also be played at Jamaica.

Meanwhile, it’s a series of the much importance for West Indies, as these five ODIs will decide their future of direct qualification for the 2019 World Cup. A series win will help them prevent playing World Cup qualifiers, whereas, a loss can see them being playing with associate nations in the qualifying tournament to assure their place in the World Cup.

They failed to qualify for the Champions Trophy, which was undoubtedly the lowest period that Windies have ever seen.

West Indies squad for first two ODIs – Jason Holder (capt), Devendra Bishoo, Jonathan Carter, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Shai Hope (wk), Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Jason Mohammad, Ashley Nurse, Kieran Powell, Rovman Powell, Kesrick Williams.
