Manchester United were very close to signing Brazil’s legendary footballer Ronaldinho only to see rain spoil the move, according to former Red Devils’ star Quinton Fortune.
Sir Alex Ferguson had sold David Beckham to Real Madrid that summer and was looking to make a marquee signing in the summer of 2003. He identified Brazil’s Ronaldinho as a potential signing after his impressive showings for the national team in 2002 World Cup.The club invited Ronaldinho to look at the facilities at Old Trafford but the rain on that particular day meant the move for Brazilian never happened. Fortune believes if Ronaldinho moved to United back then, things would have been different.”I think we got it wrong by bringing Ronaldinho in at the wrong time of year as it was raining that day he arrived at Manchester Airport,” Fortune told ManUtd.com.

“Maybe it was summer anyway but, if we’d have timed it with the right day, it could have been a different story.

“It would have been absolutely amazing to have him here. He’s one of the greatest players ever to play football and entertained with his skill, fun and joy.

“He brought it all and it will be a great occasion for everyone to play against him and watch him [in the upcoming Legends match between Manchester United and Barcelona].

“I was very fortunate to play for South Africa against him in the Olympics in front of 72,000 fans but, when he was at Barcelona, he was a different Ronaldinho so I’m hoping we get a glimpse of that and I hope I won’t have to mark him!”

The maestro then moved to Barcelona in the same window and went on to win glorious trophies during his time at Camp Nou. He had been one of the greatest players to ever play for Barcelona in his five-year stint.

Barcelona legends will be taking against Manchester United Legends later this week and Fortune hopes that Ronaldinho would show a glimpse of his best football in the game.

Fortune will be joined by the likes of Edwin van der Sar, Paul Scholes and Denis Irwin for Manchester United legends team whereas his counterpart Ronaldinho will team up with Rivaldo and Patrick Kluivert in Barcelona legends team.

The 37-year old Ronaldinho was appointed as the ambassador for Barcelona and is currently playing a very active role at the club.
