With former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly turning a year older on the 8th of July, there was a lot of buzz in the stylish southpaw’s home state of West Bengal. The Prince of Calcutta, among the most successful leaders in the game, is worshipped in several parts of the nation for his unparalleled contribution in resurrecting Indian cricket from dire straits.
When Ganguly took over captaincy in 2000, Indian cricket was at its lowest phase with the match fixing scandal hitting the side. The morale of the fans was at an all time low and the team desperately needed someone astute, resilient and lion hearted to lead the side and get back to winning ways.
The BCCI turned to Ganguly, as in the southpaw, the board saw someone of a fighter who could get Indian cricket back on track. Once he was named the captain, Indian cricket was headed upwards as the team got back the winning spirit and sprung up mighty impressive performances in several ICC events under his leadership.
On the occasion of Ganguly’s birthday, his fans in Kolkata have urged the local authorities to name a metro station after him. The metro station is located in Ganguly locality of Behala, and his fans have already begun the process of urging the authorities to do the needful.
“We have been celebrating his birthday since he was made India captain. But this time we have a special wish. We want Behala Chowrasta metro to come up in his name. As it’s a Raiway project we will write to the ministry and approach (BJP MP) Babul Supriyo,” said Ratan Haldar, a die hard fan of the legendary captain.
