Chelsea were knocked out of the Champions League thanks to a late goal from Thiago Silva. To everyone’s surprise, Chelsea were shambolic while defending their set pieces as both the PSG’s goals came from corners.
Chelsea’s long-serving captain and leader John Terry has been the main stay of their defence for almost two decades now. Unfortunately though, it was Terry who was the man to blame for PSG’s 2nd goal on the night which in the end proved to be the reason for Chelsea getting knocked out from the Champions League.
Watch the defining moment when Terry helped PSG score their 2nd goal
While defending the corner in 116th minute of the game, Johny Terry blocked Gary Cahill in the box thinking him as his opponent. As the above image shows, Terry stopped Cahill from making his move in the box and attack the ball.
Terry’s block meant Chelsea’s 2 best defenders were fighting among themselves and there was no one marking Thiago Silva, who ended up powering his header directly in to the goal and send PSG to the Quarter Finals by virtue of an away goal.
A mistake of such proportion is never expected by a season campaigner like John Terry but his mistake has cost his side big time as they are now out of the competition. This was not the first time when Terry has committed such a mistake to hurt Chelsea in the Champions League.
In the 2008 Champions League final, John Terry missed the decisive penalty kick against Manchester United. Terry’s miss meant that Chelsea did not win the coveted title all those years ago. Terry famously fired his show high and wide against Van Der Sar after Cristiano Ronaldo had missed his kick earlier.
Terry’s miss continued the penalty shoot out which ultimately saw Nicolas Anelka miss and United win their 3rd European Cup title.
Chelsea fans will think of that incident in 2008 and the one Terry inflcited yesterday and can only think, what could have happened had John Terry not messed it all up for them in the Champions League.
