Ravi Shastri, Bharat Arun

At last, Ravi Shastri had his way as Bharat Arun has been added to the Indian coaching staff in the capacity of a bowling coach of Indian cricket team. Sanjay Bangar, the batting coach of Indian cricket team, has now been promoted to the post of Assistant Coach. R Sridhar, Patrick Farhat and Shankar Basu have been retained in their respective roles. All the contracts will last for a period of two years from today, which includes the contract of Head Coach, Ravi Shastri, as well.

Despite the meeting between Shastri and BCCI officials, there was no clarity over the role of the duo of Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid. Zaheer was appointed as the bowling consultant of Indian cricket team for two years whereas Dravid was given the job of a consultant on overseas Test tours but nothing could be computed as at the end of the meeting, there was no official word on the roles of these two greats of the game.

Coming to the appointments made by BCCI today, the name of Bharat Arun has not come as a surprise as his name was brewing in the air right from the day Shastri took over the job. It was just a matter of time when he returned back to India after holidaying in the UK and asked BCCI to fulfil his demand. Arun has previously served as the bowling coach of Indian cricket team from 2014-16, the same time when Shastri was the Director of team India. Arun’s contract was not renewed last year and the post of bowling coach remained empty under Anil Kumble. Shastri though added a man of his choice.

Arun now has to leave his job at IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore and TNPL franchise VB Thiruvallur Veerans with the immediate effect. The former India pacer though had already indicated that he will give up the job if the opportunity to work with the Indian team arrives.

Sanjay Bangar has been a promoted to the rank of assistant coach to Shastri. With an extension again, Bangar is all set to be the member of Indian coaching staff for five years. He made his first entry in backroom staff in August 2014 and has got extensions since then.

R Sridhar’s, Patrick Farhat’s and Shankar Basu’s renewal of the contract is a no surprise as there was no other candidate in the race.

The heavily loaded coaching staff of Indian cricket team will travel to Sri Lanka with the Indian cricket team for a full-fledged series later this month, with doubts still looming over the role of Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid.
