These two bitter rivals have played some excellent cricket in the past. They have played 10 World Cup matches so far between them in which India has won 3 and Australia 7. With the semi finals between India and Australia to be played at Sydney on 26th March it promises to be an exciting battle between these two countries. Here we look at previous World Cup encounters between these two teams.

 1. 1983 World Cup

This was the first World Cup match between these two teams. This was the league match. It was played at Trent Bridge, Nottighnam on 13th June 1983. Australia won the toss and elected to bat. Australia lost a wicket early but Chapell , Hughes and Yallop scored useful runs. Chapell scored a century scoring 110 as Australia reached 320 for 9 in 60 over’s. The pick of bowlers for India was Kapil Dev picking 5 wickets. While Chasing Indian batsmen were never in the hunt and lost wickets. The top scorer for India was Kapil Dev with 40 runs. India were bowled out for 158 in 37.5 over’s. Australia won that match by 162 runs.

2. 1983 World Cup- again

It was another match between these two teams in World Cups. It was another league match between these two countries. This match was played at the County Stadium in Chelmsford on the 20th June 1983. India won the toss and elected to bat. Indian batsmen did not score huge runs but they contributed some useful runs. The top scorer for India was Yashpal Sharma scoring 40, Sandeep Patil 30, Kapil Dev 28 and Roger Binny 21 not out. India was bowled out for 247 in 55.5 over’s. While Chasing Australia were never in the chase losing wickets at regular intervals. The top scorer for Australia was Allan Border scoring 36 runs. Roger Binny and Madan Lal picked 4 wickets each as India dismissed Australia for 129 in 38.2 over’s and India won the match by 118 runs.

3. 1987 World Cup

It was another thrilling match between these two sides. It was another league match in World Cup history. This match was played at the Chidbramam Stadium in Chennai on the 9th October 1987. India won the toss and elected to field. The Australian batsmen played some excellent cricket as Marsh and Boon put a century stand of 110. Marsh scored 110 runs. It was an excellent display by Australian batsmen as they put a competitive total of 270 for 6 in 50 over’s. While Chasing India too had a good start with Gavaskar and Srikanth stitching 69 runs. India too put useful partnerships. Sidhu and Srikanth scored 70 and 73. India was bowled for 269 and Australia won by 1 run.  

4. 1987 World Cup- again

It was another match good match between these two teams. It was another league match in World Cup history. This match was played at the Feroshah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi on the 22nd October 1987. Australia won the toss and elected to field. India began well with Srikanth and Gavaskar put up 50 runs stand before Srikanth got out. Then Gavaskar and Sidhu put up a 75 runs partnership. Indian batsmen played well. Gavaskar, Sidhu, Vengsarkar and Azharuddin scored 50’s to help India reach a competitive total of 289 for 6 in 50 over’s. While they were giving a target of 290 Australia began well with Marsh and Boon putting a 88 runs stand for 1st wicket. Boon was the highest scorer for Australia scoring 62 while Steve Waugh scored 42 runs but no other batsmen contributed as Australia were bowled out for 233 in 49 over’s and India won the match by 56 runs. 

 5. 1992 World Cup

This was the most exciting match in World Cup history between these two teams. This was the league match in 1992 World Cup. This match was played at the Brisbane Ground on the 1 March 1992. Australia won the toss and elected to bat. Australia started off poorly losing the wickets of Mark Taylor and Marsh at the score of 18 and 31 runs. Then Boon and Jones steadied the ship stitching a partnership of 81. Dean Jones scored 90 runs . Kapil Dev and Prabhkar picked 3 wickets each. Australia scored 237 for 9 in 50 over’s. While Chasing India got a revised target off 236 in 47 over’s. India lost an early wicket of Shirkanth at the score of 6. Then Shastri and Azharuddin stitched an important partnership. India lost wickets at regular intervals. It got exciting in the last moments when India needed 13 off 6 and 5 off 4 but Australia won the match by 1 run.

61996 World Cup

It was another exciting match in World Cup history. It was a league match of the 1996 World Cup. This match was played at the Wankedhe Stadium, Mumbai on the 27th February 1996.  Australia won the toss and elected to bat. Mark Taylor and Mark Waugh put up a century stand among them. Taylor was the first player to be out for 59 runs. After that two more partnership took place. Mark Waugh scored a brilliant 126 to help Australia post a competitive total of 258. While Chasing India lost 2 wickets at the score of 7. Then Azharuddin and Sachin Tendulkar put up a partnership of 63 before Azharuddin got out. Then Sachin and Manjrekar put another useful partnership before Sachin Tendulkar got out for 90. India were bowled out for 242 in 48 over’s and Australia won the match by 16 runs. Damien Fleming was the best bowler for Australia taking 5 wickets.

7. 1999 World Cup

It was another match between these two teams in World Cup history. This match was a league match. It was played at the Oval Stadium in London on the 4th June 1999. India won the toss and elected to field. Gilchrist and Mark Waugh started the innings off a great start putting 97 runs for the first wicket Gilchrist was the first man out for 31. After that Gilchrist and Ponting stitched another useful partnership of 60 runs before Mark Waugh was dismissed for 83. Then the rest of batting order made useful contribution as Australia made a competitive 282 for 6 in 50 over’s. While Chasing India lost 3 main wickets of Sachin, Ganguly, Dravid and Azaharuddin to reduce India to 17 for 4. Then Robin Singh and Ajay Jadjea sticthced an important partnership 141 to steady the ship but. Jadjea scored 100 not out while Mongia scored 75 but India were bowled out for 205 in 48.2 over’s and won the match by 77 runs. 

8. 2003 World Cup

It was another match in the World Cup history between these two teams. This was the league match in the World Cup 2003. This match was played at the Super Sport Park, Centurion on the 15th February 2003. India won the toss and elected to bat. The Indian batting were tested by quality bowlers like Mcgharth, Lee, Gillespie and Hogg. India lost wickets at regular intervals. The top scorer for India in that innings was Sourav Gangluy scoring 36 and Harbhajan scoring 28 runs. India were bowled out for 125 runs in 41.4 over’s. While chasing Australia lost only 1 wicket of Gilchrist. Hayden scored 45 runs and Ponting scored 24 runs as Australia chased the target of 125 in 22.2 over’s. It was a dominating performance by Australia.  

 9. 2003 World Cup- finals

The World Cup 2003 was a tremendous journey for team India. This was the finals of the tournament. It was played at Johannesburg on the 23th March 2003. In this match India won the toss and elected to field. Gilchrist and Hayden began off to great start hitting the Indian bowlers all over the park. The Indian bowlers bowled poorly and did not put pressure on the Australian batsmen. Both Hayden and Gilchrist put a 105 runs stand in 14 over’s. After Gilchrist and Hayden got out in space of 20 runs then Ponting and Martyn was severe on the Indian bowlers. Ponting scored a breathtaking 140 runs off 121 balls hitting 4 fours and 8 sixes while Martyn scored 88 off 84 balls that helped Australia to post a massive score of 359 for 2. While Chasing India got off to poor start losing Tendulkar early. The only resistance came from Sehwag who scored 82 runs and Dravid 47. India were bowled out for 234 and lost the match by 125 runs.

10. 2011 World Cup

This was the most interesting match between these two teams in World Cups. It was played at Motera Stadium at Ahmadabad on the 24th March 2011. It was the quarter finals of the tournament. Australia won the toss and elected to bat. Watson and Haddin started off well scoring 40 off the first partnership before Ashwin took the wicket of Watson. Then Haddin and pointing stitched 70 runs partnership before Yuvraj Singh picked 2 wickets to reduce Australia to 140 for 3. Zaheer Khan also picked 2 wickets and did not let Australia to score big runs. The top scorer for Australia was Ponting who scored 104 runs as Australia scored 260 for 6 in 50 over’s. While Chasing India began well with Sehwag and Sachin creating 44 runs opening wicket partnership. Sachin Tendulkar and Gambhir scored half centuries to steady the innings. At one stage India were struggling at 187 for 5 but Raina and Yuvraj Singh ensured that India crossed the line. Yuvraj Singh scored half century while Raina scored 34 vital runs.
