Mithali Raj Overwhelmed With the Love and Affection Back Home 1

Indian Women’s team captain Mithali Raj expressed her delight and happiness at the love she and her team received after coming back from England following a successful World Cup campaign. The Indian eves played an excellent brand of cricket all through the tournament but faltered in the final hurdle against England to surrender the World Cup by just 9 runs.

Taking to her twitter handle, Mithali wrote, “So much love back home. Overwhelmed! This journey has provided me with so many wondrous lifelong memories, Grateful.” The tournament also witnessed Mithali Raj becoming the highest run scorer in Women’s ODI’s. She achieved the feat in the group game against Australia and also became the 1st batswoman to score more than 6,000 runs.

The Indian team was felicitated from all quarters and after getting cash rewards from Sports Minister Vijay Goel and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it is time for the state governments to felicitate them. While the Maharashtra Government presented Rs. 50 lakh each to 3 cricketers and 2 support staffs from Maharashtra, Mithali was handed over Rs. 1 crore and a house plot by the Telangana government.

It was only the 2nd time that India qualified for the final. The last time they did so was way back in 2005 and Mithali Raj was the captain then also. The Indian eves performed brilliantly all through the tournament and looked a promising unit. They began their campaign with a resounding victory over eventual champions England and followed it up with convincing victories against West Indies, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Just when they looked set to book a place in the semi-final a couple of losses on the bounce against the Proteas and the Aussies put them in a precarious situation. They had to beat New Zealand in the last group game to qualify and they did that with relative comfort. It was a thoroughly professional performance by the Indians and they followed it up with another inspired performance in the semi final against 6-time World Champions Australia. It was Harmanpreet Kaur’s sensational unbeaten 171 which helped India thrash the mighty Aussies by 36 runs.
