The Story

Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga isn’t impressed with the quality of the Sri Lanka Lankan Cricket team and has revealed that he has stopped following the national team playing cricket.

Sri Lanka has found the transition phase very difficult to cope with. The year 2017 has been highlighted with a underwhelming show in the Champions Trophy and the home series against Zimbabwe.

Critics have pointed out that the failure has come as the reason for unfit players and inconsistent young guns.

Administration to be blamed

Ranatunga feels that the administrators are to be blamed for the downfall of the Sri Lankan cricket team. He also took a shot at the cricketers and cricket administrators whom he tagged as money minded individuals only concerned with foreign trips and perks rather than a commitment to winning for the country.

“Sri Lanka Cricket and the manner in which it is being administered and managed is so disgusting that I don’t watch our national cricket anymore,” Ranatunga was quoted as saying by ‘Ceylon Today’.

The 52-year-old, who played 93 Tests scoring 5,105 runs, and 269 ODIs accumulating 7,456 runs, said, also said that he will approach President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to set up the Interim Committee to manage Sri Lanka Cricket.

Sri Lanka is currently engaged in a full-fledged series with India which includes three-Tests, five One-Dayers and a T20 International. The series, however, has begun on an awful note as the hosts suffered a massive loss in the 1st Test of the series at the Galle International Stadium.

Ranatunga states that he preferred watching the on-going England-South Africa Test series, which England is leading 2-1 rather than watching the home series.
