Bishan Singh Bedi Takes A Jibe At Insensitive Indian Fans With A Lankan Reference 1

The Story

Sri Lanka is currently standing on the verge of getting whitewashed at the hands of the Virat Kohli-led Indian side. The hosts are currently following on India’s challenging innings total of 487 runs after being bowled out for just 130 runs in the first innings.

This poor performance at Pallekelle is being witnessed following underwhelming shows in the previous two Tests at Galle and Colombo. The Lankan side, marred by injuries, has been at the receiving end of the criticism.

While everything has gone against them in this series, Bishan Singh Bedi, the former India left arm spinner, came out in support of the team but in a slightly different manner.

The veteran of 67 Tests, who is regarded as the most successful left arm Indian spinner, felt that Sri Lankan cricket team was very lucky in terms of the treatment they receive from the fans.

He tried to make comparison with the Indian counterparts who historically are infamous for bursts of outrage after lowly performances from the Indian team.

Here is what he tweeted:

“Must say Lankans r terribly patient w/their Cricket heroes! Had it been w/Indians immediate ‘security’ would’ve been sought & granted…!!”

Unnecessary comparison:

Bedi’s remarks is a prompt description of the overreaction from people who mob cricketer’s residence and burn posters.

Generally, the habit of handling losses has, even the hefty ones like the one of Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final in London, did not see any furious reaction except sharp criticism for blaring faults and under performance.

Security was tightened up in the localites where prominent names dwell but no insensible incident was recorded. This clearly depicts that the intolerance is surely on a decline.

Bedi has been a vocal critic with a keen eye on improvement on quality of cricket but tweets of this kind surely cannot be taken in a good, progressive taste, unfortunately.
