As the clock hit 12 in the midnight to mark August 15, 2017 (Tuesday), India celebrates the 70 years of Independence since 1947 which further saw the country producing iconic sports persons across different traits, who witnessed struggled and the glory in the same timeline as cricket has been seen as a religion as we have drawn inspiration from sporting icons from time to time.

We were supposed to compile the list of five, which equally was not a daunting task, but a tough job to skip out many veterans of the sports itself on the auspicious occasion to recollect the memories and remember the services they have rendered to the country which has excelled in the field of sports after embattling as a nation, as the professional rose against the tides to carve a niche out of it.

As the sports has always been seen as a tool to bridge the gap between multiple countries following the strained relations, the sportspersons have eventually evoked the spirit of patriotism while taking the field at the elite level which further found die-hard fans throwing unconditional love behind the sports fraternity while having special place for idols in their hearts — to chant the slogans in favour of the nation.

From the hockey wizard Varanasi-born dribbler Mohammed Shahid to wrestling Geeta Phogat, we have had witnessed the success stories to its length and breadth and cricket, in particular, has enjoyed the fair share in the span of over eight decades.

As the country has produced the top-notch sporting heroes we have witnessed the shooting champion Abhinav Bindra setting a great example owing to the sacrifice like Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Dhoni stood as a tall figure to bring glory and to overwhelm against all the odds, as being among the greatest sporting ambassadors like Kapil Dev in 1983 World Cup Triumph at the Iconic Lord’s.

Sportzwiki salutes the courage and will Power of all the sportspersons for holding the head high of a nation which has been a home to approximately 1.3 billion people from all walks of a life.

However, we’ve listed five iconic national sports legends, who have had made the nation proud following their achievements in different aspects of the sport itself.
