Former India left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi has been appointed as the spin bowling coach of Bangladesh cricket team.
As of now, he has been offered a short-term contract for the Test series against Australia, and it is understood that the board and Joshi will have a talk on his long-term future after the series.
Joshi was in discussions with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) since February earlier this year, but later, the Bangladesh Board turned its attention towards Stuart MacGill.
The former Aussie spinner accepted the proposal but later denied it at the eleventh hour, which left BCB with no option. Joshi was on the top priority list along with Venkatapathy Raju, and it is the former man who has emerged out as the winner in the end.
The two-match Test series against Australia will be the first assignment as the spin bowling consultant of Bangladesh cricket team. In all probability, his contract will be renewed, and in fact, the board will look to give him a proper contract to make everything clear.
It is to be noted that Joshi is one of the aspirants to become the next coach of Delhi Ranji team. He has applied for the post and appeared for an interview on August 20. The results of the interview will be declared on August 21, i.e. today, and it will be an interesting scenario if he is appointed to the role.
The Test series between Bangladesh and Australia will start from August 27; the first will be played at Shere Bangla Stadium in Dhaka. One more Test in Chittagong will follow. It is after 12 long years when Australia is touring Bangladesh. After the conclusion of the series, Bangladesh is scheduled to travel South Africa for two Tests, three ODIs and two T20I games in September/October.
