Three centuries in four innings in the ongoing tour, Shikhar Dhawan had made life difficult for the Sri Lankan bowlers. The southpaw, who was the highest run-scorer in this year’s Champions Trophy, scored two brilliant centuries in the Test series and began the ODI series, in the same manner, slamming an unbeaten 132 off just 90 balls to help India win the first ODI at Dambulla by 9 wickets.
In the ongoing second ODI at Pallekele, the left-handed batsman started from where he had left in the first game as he raced away to 49 with the help of fours and a six and was looking destined for another big knock before a piece of brilliance from Angelo Mathews ended his promising knock.
Chasing 237, India openers Dhawan and Rohit Sharma put the team on top by adding 109 runs for the first wicket before the latter fell for 54. And 4 runs later, the hosts clawed their way back into the match by sending back the in-form Dhawan. Left-arm spinner Milinda Siriwardana bowled a tossed up delivery onto the stumps. Dhawan went down to play a sweep but only manage to loft it towards the backward square. The ball, nevertheless, was looking destined to fell in the no man’s area but Mathews had some other ideas as he sprinted from short fine and flew parallel to the ground to complete a stunning catch before being mobbed by his stunned teammates.
