Chennai Super Kings have come up with a compliment of the highest degree for their former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni after the latter’s heroics against Sri Lanka in the second ODI at Pallekele on Thursday (August 24).
Chasing a modest 237, India were cruising at one stage after openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan added 109 runs for the first wicket before the former was dismissed by Akila Dananjaya for 54. However, the game soon turned on its head when Milinda Siriwardana dismissed a well-set Dhawan just four runs after Rohit’s dismissal. The wicket opened the floodgates as Akila Dananjaya ran riot through India’s middle-order, dismissing Kedar Jadhav, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel for single-digit scores to leave the visitors reeling at 131 for 7.
With India staring down the barrel, Dhoni, the man for all seasons, once again came to the team’s rescue and displayed remarkable calmness, sharing an unbeaten partnership of 100 runs with Bhuvneshwar Kumar to take the Men in Blue home from a precarious position. The World Cup-winning skipper remained unbeaten on 45 while Bhuvneshwar scored 53.
The former captain has been garnering praise from all over for playing another brilliant knock under pressure situation and Chennai Super Kings also joined the bandwagon.
Paying a tribute to India’s longs-serving star who is known as Captain Cool, Chennai Super Kings, on Twitter, wrote:“Even your fridge will be warm next to this man. #MSD.”
