England opener Haseeb Hameed has potentially lost the chances of becoming a part of the touring Ashes party later this year after the young right-hander suffered a fractured a finger on his right hand.
Hameed picked up the injury after being hit on the gloves by seamer James Harris while batting for Lancashire on the third day of the First division game against Middlesex at Lord’s, on Thursday (September 21). Consequently, he had to retire hurt.
But, the 20-year-old didn’t stay out for long and walked out to bat after a break to help his side avoid defeat.
But, his stay at the crease was short as he ran out of partners just eight balls into his innings. The club confirmed the news of his injury through a statement on their Twitter handle after the culmination of the match.
Short injury-troubled career
This latest injury news isn’t something which the ECB would be happy about as it has come exactly two days after fast bowler Toby Roland-Jones, another Ashes probable suffered a lower back injury. Oddly, England, at the moment, are in look out for a proper opener and a fit third seamer.
The three Tests old Hameed has been injury affected for on more than a couple of occasions in his short career. The right-hander made his debut last year at Rajkot and registered a score of 82 on debut before following it up with a beautiful 59 in the Mohali Test. However, his stay in India was cut short after he fractured his little finger that needed him to fly back home for surgery.
Earlier this year, Hameed was forced to retire hurt after sustaining a blow in a first-class game against Cambridge MCCU in April. He is also expected to undergo a sinus surgery later in the year to correct a breathing problem.
The England selectors will likely meet next week to draw up the squad for the upcoming Ashes.
