Seven people got arrested during the 2nd ODI between India and Australia held at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata for allegedly involving in online cricketing betting, police said on Saturday.
The police came to know on Friday that some men were allegedly betting on the 2nd ODI and a raid was conducted at a house in A Block were some people accused were residing and carrying out their illegal operations.
Seven men who were suspected were identified, as Sumit Malhotra (30), Ashprit Singh (25), Anubhav Anand (22), Sumit Singh Sachdeva (22), Satnam Singh (38), Sachin Sehgal (36) and Gagandeep (31), as per reports from the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Milind Mahadeo Dumbere.
Around 12 mobile phones, three laptops and Rs. 27, 570 cash were revived from the raid and a further sum amounting to Rs. 1,95,535 was at stake at the time when the raid was conducted. As per their rules, the amount won by the individuals were divided among them the next day with the help of the associates, the police officer said.
The seven accused men were accepting bets online and were having mobile phones that had a recording facility.
The DCP who was in charge of the case said that Malhotra, Ashprit and Satnam also installed an online betting software namely “Betting Assistance” which gave all the rates, timings and choices of the people participating in the betting process.
Meanwhile, it was India who continued their exceptional run and defeated the Aussies by 50 runs in the 2nd ODI to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Unless anything dramatic happens, it will take a herculean task for the Aussies to make a comeback in the series. It was a special day for youngster Kuldeep Yadav who became only the 3rd Indian bowler to take an ODI hat-trick and the 5th overall to bag a hat-trick in international cricket.
Kapil Dev and Chetan Sharma bagged hat-tricks in ODI cricket while Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan bagged hat-tricks in Test.
