Centuries in the just-concluded first Test have helped South Africa stars Hashim Amla, and Dean Elgar moves up in the latest ICC rankings for Test batsmen, released by the governing body on Tuesday (October 3).
Amla scored 137 and 28 while Elgar missed his double century by just one run in the first innings before scoring 18 in the following innings as South Africa thrashed Bangladesh by 333 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Amla has moved up one place to the seventh position in the latest rankings while Elgar has jumped four places to take the 12th position.
Other gainers in the latest ranking are Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis who has gained two places to reach 16th position while Temba Bavuma has moved up three places to reach a career-best 36th position.
The latest ranking also took into consideration the first Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka which the latter won by 21 runs. The players who have made significant gains with their performances in Abu Dhabi are Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal jumping 13 places to take the 20th position after scores of 155 not out and seven, opener Dimuth Karunaratne moving up five places to 26th place and Niroshan Dickwella moving up 20 places to take a career-best 41st position.
Meanwhile, the highest-ranked Indian in the latest ranking is Cheteshwar Pujara at third while captain Virat Kohli is at sixth. KL Rahul (9) and Ajinkya Rahane (10) are also in top 10.

In bowling, South Africa pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada has moved up one place to the fifth position while left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has jumped five places to reach career-best 18th position after taking seven wickets in the match.
For Sri Lanka, Dilruwan Perera (up one place to 26th), Nuwan Pradeep (up one place to 33rd) and Suranga Lakmal (up two places to 36th) have also progressed. The bowling list is led by England’s James Anderson followed by India spin duo Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, who earned rating points after taking 11 wickets in the match, has not moved from his place and is at fourth.
