Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat at Colombo. The Pakistan innings began off to a poor start losing the wicket of Ahmed Shezad for 1 to Dhammika Prasad. After that Azhar Ali and Mohmmad Hafeez played some excellent shots to steady the visitors.

Pakistan lost the second wicket at the score of 51 when Azhar Ali was caught out by the Sri Lankan keeper. The umpire gave it not-out but the Sri Lankans reviewed it. The decision was reversed and was given out. Azhar Ali was out for 26 by Dhammika Prasad. At the end of first session, Pakistan were 70 for 2.

After coming back from lunch Pakistan lost their third wicket of Younis Khan for just 6 runs as they were reduced to 74 for 3. Pakistan lost 2 more wickets of Mohmmad Hafeez and Asad Shafiq. Mohammad Hafeez was out for 46 and Asad Shafiq was out for 2 runs. Pakistan was struggling at 95 for 5 before rain came.

After the rain break Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals and was bowled out for just 138 runs. The pick of bowlers for Sri Lanka was Tharindu Kaushal picking up 5 wickets, Prasad picking up 3 wickets and Chammera picking 1 wicket and 1 was a run out. This was the end of the 2nd session.

In the third session, Sri Lanka began their innings off to a slow start with Silva and Karunathe leaving the good balls and punishing the bad balls away. Sri Lanka lost the wicket of Karunathe for 28 at the score of 47. Sangakara and Silva have put a good partnership of 23. Sri Lanka trail by 68 runs with 9 wickets in hand and hoping for a great day, wrest the initiative from Pakistan and be in commanding position.
