Fireworks were expected from the discarded Indian batsmen Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh on the opening day of ongoing Ranji Trophy as this season is of utmost importance for them. This is probably the last chance for them to make a comeback in the Indian team but neither of two could grab the opportunity in the first innings of the second round of Ranji Trophy 2017/18.

First talking of Gambhir, the birthday boy, coming afresh with a century against Assam, opened the batting for Delhi along with Unmukt Chand. He was dismissed by pacer Anureet Singh after the batsman gave a catch to skipper Mahesh Rawat behind the stumps. It was a disappointing moment as the left-handed batsman was expected to carry his form into this game as well, but he has now lost one chance, which might bring down his confidence as well.
Early breakthroughs had an impact on Delhi, and they lot their first three wickets on a score of 34. At the time of writing the news, Nitish Rana was batting alongside debutant Himmat Singh.

Talking next abut Yuvraj Singh, he was making his comeback in the Ranji team after missing the first game due to his fitness test. He took over the captaincy from Jiwanjot Singh in this game.
The all-rounder had to come to the crease on eight delivery of the game after both the openers were back in the pavilion. He has had a good start, but Yuvraj failed to have an extended stay at the crease and was dismissed with a score of 20 off 32.

Yuvraj’s wicket left Punjab in a big problem, and they are on a score of 120/7 at Lunch. At present, Abhishek Gupta and Abhishek Sharma are batting at the crease. Both of them are playing just their second first-class game.
Meanwhile, both Gambhir and Yuvraj would be hoping to turn their fortunes in the second innings of the game to get the momentum and confidence as a string of poor scores will further jeopardise their hopes of a comeback in the Indian team.

It is a fact that MSK Prasad led selection committee does not ignore the domestic performances, a fact which these too are well versed off as they had been handed their comebacks since the new selection committee has taken over.
