The standing up issue during the national anthem has become a national topic debate for a year now.
A few months back it was made mandatory for all the theatres to play the national anthem before the screening of a movie by a bench led by Chief Justice Dipak Mishra for the ‘love of the motherland’.
It came after the much-debated Nationalism issue which rose into the news in February last year. Many people supported Supreme Court’s order. However, few disagreed giving a valid reason that mere standing up can’t be proving point of patriotism. Even a few people were beaten up at cinema halls for not standing up during the national anthem which included a physically challenged and a polio patient.
Indian opening batsman, Gautam Gambhir who is very vocal on this social issues supported Supreme Court’s order.
Recently, Supreme Court Judge D.Y. Chandrachud ruled out the logic behind November 30, 2016, decision saying that there is no need for an Indian ’to wear patriotism on their sleeves’, on a hearing petition filed by Kodungallor Film Society in Kerala to recall the November verdict.
However, Gambhir opposed this verdict saying that people can stand outside restaurants and club for minutes and to stand for a 52 seconds national anthem is tough, from his official twitter handle. It had a mixed reaction, as many people were against Gambhir’s take arguing that nobody can ask to prove patriotism, whereas, others are of the opinion that Gambhir was right and it people should be made to stand for the national anthem.

The cricketer from Delhi once again posted a video on social media site twitter strengthening his previous stands which are spurring controversies every day. In a video, two underprivileged children were seen showing many tricks to earn money for their food. Gambhir quoted the video saying,
“Am sorry my young friend at d moment we don’t have time to stand for u as we r busy debating whether to stand for the national anthem or not!”

The tweet gained much support, as people were of the opinion that patriotism should be left to individual choices instead of making it a national issue and people should debate on the real problems that India is facing. The issues are of poverty, farmer suicide, malnourishment etc.
