Depay trained with United for the first time on Monday and pictures show the Dutchman’s shorts feature the number 26 – although that doesn’t mean he’ll wear the same number on his first-team shirt next season.

United players did not used to wear their squad numbers in training. Juan Sebastian Veron’s first session featured the No.7, which inevitably led to rumours he was replacing David Beckham.
Depay, though, has inherited the vacant number from the Japanese attacking midfielder Shinji Kagawa, who returned to Borussia Dortmund last year.

Manchester United are concerned with the shirt number of Depay as the former players with shirt number 26 did not do well.
Before Kagawa’s two disappointed seasons, Gabriel Obertan used to wear the number who was even more disappointing.

Before Obertan, Angolan striker Manucho used to wear the cursed kit number who only made three appearances for the Red Devils from the substitute bench.

Although Depay is expected to wear the number 26 on United’s pre-season tour, he could receive a new squad number for the start of the season.
Luke Shaw wore the number 28 in the United States last year before he received the No.3 shirt.
Although, Memphis Depay, who was the to scorer in Eridivisie last season for champions PSV may shine with the cursed kit number under Louis Van Gaal whom he had played under for the Netherlands national team.
